He was raised along with his sister, Enid and four brothers, Ron, Ellis, Royce and Bevan on the family farm at Glenore Grove. One eventful day on the way home from Glenore Grove State School, he along with several others found a body floating in the lagoon. This led to his later involvement with the true crime book Murder in the Rain. At the age of 20 Dudley joined the local Light Horse Brigade at Forest Hill, and in December 1941 enlisted in the army joining 2/10th Battalion, 7th Division AIF. He saw active service in New Guinea at Port Moresby, Lae, Dumpu, Milne Bay, Shaggy Ridge, Ramu Valley, Gona, Buna and Finschafen. He also travelled the Kokoda Track during the New Guinea campaign. On December 12 1947 Dudley married Beryl Goschnick, having meet her at the Lowood show. Their marriage was blessed with eight children. The couple farmed at Glenore Grove until retiring to Laidley in 1987. Dudley was a keen sportsman throughout his life, playing tennis and cricket for Lake Clarendon. He was a spin bowler of some note and cherished his hat-trick trophy. In his later years he played both indoor and lawn bowls and represented Queensland in indoor bowls. He became involved with many local clubs, working tirelessly and often in executive capacities. In January 2000, Dudley lost his wife and partner of 52 years. Despite failing eyesight, he continued to live on his own for several years. His health gradually deteriorated and on the evening of Wednesday September 26, he passed away peacefully in his sleep. Dudley Kimlin will always be remembered as a man who could be relied upon and one who was always willing to lend a hand. Strong, active, never flustered and always there for his family, he was a proud but humble man of few words. --------------------------------- National Bingo Night.
