    3. I am trying to workout the classification of passengers among the German migrants. I once thought I had this correct but have been taken to task and may have it wrong. The ship I am looking at is the Charles Dickens arriving in 1877. It lists 6 paying passengers who I assume paid their own way and had employment or land on arrival. There are 13 assisted passengers. I always understood that these were passengers brought out by an agent and their fare was paid by the agents or their employer but they repaid it over the period of the contract. I am now being told that 'assisted' means their fare was paid by the government only. That then raises the question of what did the government bring them here for? It says there were 368 free passengers. What does 'free' mean? My research tells me that most of the passengers went to migrant camps at Kangaroo Point or Beenleigh before being allotted blocks of land at Marburg and Middle Ridge. My research also tells me that many were assisted in their fares but that is more assumption than knowledge. It then lists 121 remittance passengers. What were 'remittance' passengers. Thanks Albert Grulke
