    3. Hi DI Limestone was the original name for Ipswich. Don't know why or when it was changed. I do know that in 1859 when Queensland became a state Limestone was actually preferred by many as the capital but Brisbane won out because it had a port.     3. Chris and Di Surveying for the proposed "Township of Limestone" was carried out in 1842 by Henry Wade. Governor Gipps who had visited the site and had decided that a town should be established there, had a personal interest in it, decided to adopt the name of the town Ipswich on the River Orwell in Suffolk, England. In February of 1843 he gave orders to E Deas Thompson, Colonial Secretary in Sydney to write to the Surveyor-General on the subject. A government notice was published on April 10, 1843 that a site had been fixed for a township named "Ipswich on the plateau at Limestone, Moreton Bay in the County of Stanley.
