Hello All, I was searching the South African Eastern Cape Mailing List and came across this posting. As there are many connected to the Caesar Godeffroy and German families to all parts of the globe I thought this article appropriate reading. Regards Jenny From: "Mark Pautz" < pautzgenealogy@googlemail.com> Subject: [ZA-EC] Eastern Cape - 900 Images Date: Tue, 19 Aug 2008 00:14:31 +0100 Dear Friends, Due to work and family pressures I've had a low profile on the forum for the past year or so. Nevertheless, I have remained subscribed to all genealogy and family history lists, and have been passively "lurking" in the background! Despite flying under the radar, there have been all kinds of interesting developments over the last 12 months. On of the most important was my involvement in the events arranged to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the German Settlers in British Kaffraria. Stephanie Victor of the Amathole Museum invited me to deliver a paper at the seminar in King William's Town that was focussed on "Widening the Scope: Revisiting the Impact of the German Settlers on the Eastern Cape". The topic of my particular session was "A Personal Journey Through Genealogy". I developed an image-rich presentation and flew in from the United Kingdom to deliver it to a group of about 80 people on Saturday, July 5. I shared the spotlight with Geraldine Morcom, Dr. Keith Tankard, Pastor Arthur Becker, Dr. Susan Brodrick, Gill Vernon and Stephanie Victor...and it all went remarkable well. I had a great deal of fun in the process and it was wonderful to spend quality time with people with similar obsessions! On Monday, July 7 (150 years to the day that the Caesar Godeffroy sailed into the mouth of the Buffalo River carrying the first group of agricultural settlers from Germany), I also attended Dr. Keith Tankard's session at the Courtenay-Latimer Hall at the East London Museum. Keith presented a preview of his forthcoming book "Broken Promises" which looks at the German Settler Immigration programmes that included the Military Settlers, the Agricultural Settlers and the Kennaway girls. It was fascinating evening...and the networking opportunity was superb! I returned to the UK on a high, and wondered what I could do to share just a little of that excitement with those of you who were not able to be a part of the events. Well, over the last month or so, I have uploaded almost 900 high-resolution photos to my Flickr account in a folder I've called "British Kaffraria". Included you will find: * Circa-600 photographs from my visit to the Eastern Cape in 2008. * Circa-300 photographs from my visit to the Eastern Cape in 2005. * Photos of tombstones in the cemeteries in King William's Town, Braunschweig, Macleantown, Berlin and Potsdam. * Memorials in King William's Town and East London. * Buildings of significance to my research in all of the places listed above. * Photographs of newspapers from the Daily Dispatch archive in the East London Central Library. * Scans of 150th anniversary documentation. * A scan of the Daily Dispatch article based on the interviews conducted with Keith Tankard and myself. * Photos of the seminar in King William's Town and Keith Tankard's book launch in East London. * Historical documents photographed in the Amathole and East London Museums. * A few family shots and lots of nice scenic stuff. I still have loads more material to post (going back many more years) but who knows how long it's going to take me to add all of that! So, in the interests of getting things out and sharing, please feel free to dig in here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/anjinsan/sets/72157606132551289/ In the northern hemisphere we are spoiled with inexpensive, high quality broadband connections, and so I have no idea how this will work for those of you with slow dial-up connections in SA. You can click on each of the thumbnails to open up a larger version of the shot, and a (sometimes fairly detailed) description of what you're looking at. However, my recommendation for an evening's light entertainment would be to grab a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon, to click the "Slideshow" button at the top-right of the screen and to sit back and enjoy the show! I have also uploaded three video clips from Dr. Keith Tankard's most excellent book preview in East London - take a look here: * http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=2554562735973178957&hl=en * http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3303240367045625973&hl=en * http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4903085347621881283&hl=en Finally, please take a look at some of my recent, related blog entries at: * http://malfark.blogspot.com/2008/07/song-of-germans-in-south-africa.html * http://malfark.blogspot.com/2008/05/pioneering-spirits.html Enough for tonight - it's late!
