    1. [SEQ-Germans] Using Facebook and other Social Networking Sites for Family Research
    2. Chris Schmidt
    3. Hi there I was wondering if anyone else had the idea I had? MySpace, Facebook and other social networking sites such as Bebo could be used for family history research. I am sure many have thought of it but thought I would post it here as an idea. I have had particular luck with Facebook as it caters to a slightly older more professional market, whereas MySpace caters for teens, bands and movies. Just look up your names on the site- of course it works best with less than common names. For example, I know that all the Kapernicks in Australia are related so I wrote to each of the 100 or so that have profiles on Facebook and also Bebo and MySpace. Even with common names like Smith it can be useful when you have a full name- like Stacie Louise Smith. There is only one! I found some of my Smith-Kapernick relatives that way. Its worth a shot and it is cheaper than mailout. I guess a lot of people dont respond and you send out a 100 messages you get maybe ten responses. However, those responses are worth while- and you did not spend $55 in postage to get them! For the less up with modern technology and would like more advice on using these sites, feel free to ask. ] Bye thye way, if anyone is on facebook and wants to ad me as a friend- particularly those who I have regular contact with- please feel. My url is www.facebook.com/chris.schmidt66. I have not got much info about me there- never had time to do it. Regards Chris
