My thanks to the hundreds of people who voted in my on-line poll, sent feedback by letter or email, or spoke to me at the Expo, Roadshow and recent seminars. With your help I have made a decision about my future involvement in genealogy. Since I first connected to the Internet in 1997, I have spent hundreds of hours every year helping other family historians (free). I enjoy helping, but now I need to change the way I do it. I want to spend more time with my family and friends, more time doing my own research, and more time learning about modern trends in genealogy. (If you heard my recent talks in Brisbane and Sydney you will know what I mean by 'modern trends'.) I also need to catch up on the backlog of research requests that accumulated while I was a carer for my father. This is what will happen: * My free email 'Updates Newsletter' will be discontinued in its current format (but an alternative will be offered to current subscribers, whom I will contact soon). * My 'Queensland Newsflash' Web page will be discontinued. * In addition to my own Web site, I will publish free research tips and longer 'advice articles' in several other places on the Internet. * I will continue to expand and update my Web site, which currently consists of over 100 pages. It has free information and advice on many topics related to genealogy, and over 51,000 names from my indexes to Archives sources, cemeteries, certificates, books, photographs etc. Thousands more names will be added in the future. Please note that I have begun moving my Web pages to a new site (my own domain name). * Instead of reading mailing lists and offering advice there, I will unsubscribe from lists and just use Google Alerts and Rootsweb's PML to find posts relevant to my own interests. One mailing list administrator has asked me to refrain from putting links to my Web site in my mailing list posts - so I am 'playing it safe' on this list too. If you would like the Web addresses for my main Web site and my other online tips/articles, you will need to email me privately, off-list.
