Obviously it was not needed to prove your name, age or marital standing in those days. I have several people who 'remarried' whilst married to someone else - a divorce was an extremely costly business. A divorced or separated wife had no legal rights where her children were concerned and could claim no part of her husband's property. I am currently reading about the Many Lives and Loves of Daisy Bates C.B.E. and it is interesting to read how she kept re-inventing herself and married 3 time, firstly to underage Breaker Morant and followed on with two bigamous marriages. There was no centralised system for the recording of Births, deaths and marriages in those days, and now we wonder why we have so many "brick walls". Cheers Janet
