And people should also be aware of Ancestry's latest ploy to get you to subscribe. If you no longer have a paid subscription, you are unable to contact the owner of any other trees, nor are you able to view any information on anyone else's tree. So, having your tree up there is solely for the benefit of other users, and in particular Ancestry so they can charge other users to look at data YOU own, NOT Ancestry. I'm now planning to take my tree off the Ancestry website, it's absolutely no use at all to me now. Any suggestions about other family tree websites I could use? Hi Chris, I think we all had spasms of silliness when we were new at the game of family history. I too joined that and of course they keep your information but you cannot go in to view it again without paying. Hi Kay Thanks for the correction- my brain is not working properly at the moment it is www.genereunited.co.uk. Everyday I making new connections with people interested in my families. I have not looked into the official records as it is all U.K based and all my families are German- escept some of those that have married into the German families- but it certainly is a good site. I like how it matches your tree without giving away too much information and that you maintain complete control of your data. Back years ago I joined OneGreatFamily when i was a little sillier in the early days of my family research- but all information is viewable to everyone that searches and logs in. It does automatic matches and merges but also provides hints on possible matches and I found some people were manually merging with hints that werent actually hints. You can do hand merges with other data in the database which means you lose control of your data. Now they will not pull my gedcom data down either, as I nolonger "own" it.
