This explanation supports what I have understood. Volker went to Cecil Plains for 5 or 7 years. He then came back to Middle Ridge and took up a land order. My understanding is that he and each of his sons took up an order. The blocks were all together. Later the sons but one sold their blocks and moved out to Westbrook. In fact Volker Street is still there as is the old house or was last time I was in Toowoomba. If my memory is correct the Arndt and Drewes did similar. Albert grulke Albert is thus probably correct the Drewes went to St Helens Station on work contract for five years before returning to Middle Ridge. A search of the Archives produces results for Ferdinand and Franz Drews taking up two blocks each in Toowoomba in April 1868 - just 5 years after they arrived. They appear to be the younger two sons of the family who would have been 13 and 11. This seems a little odd - but it could be the German habit of having several Christian names and not being known by the first is causing some confusion ( says someone who is not known by his first name). Albert - when you say "took up a land order" - do you mean they used the land order that they would have received for paying some part of their immigration passage - or do you mean that they selected blocks of land that had been cut up for closer settlement? My understanding is that they came out on n employment contract. When the contract ceased they were able to take up a land order at Middle Ridge. They paid a sum of money for it and then had to develop the land. The reason they stayed the extra 3 years after the contract ceased was to save the money to buy the land order. This is different to those who came mostly to the Lockyer with land orders allocated as they arrived. That sir what I mean and how I understand it.
