If you have read any records of voyages, logs, diaries, Surgeon's reports you would see that the experiences of the passengers was different, depending on the ship on which ship they travelled. Most Captains and most Surgeons had concern for their passengers, and they ensured the passengers had plenty of exercise and ate healthily avoiding scurvy, and their quarters were clean and fresh, the latrines emptied and washed with carbolic soap.
