The "History of the German Community in the Clarence River District of NSW" by Geoffrey Burkhardt and Nola Mackey, Grafton Family History Centre 1999 (ISBN 0-646-37873-2) mentions Carl and Sussanna BACKES/BACKUS/BACCHUS. According to this source, the couple came from Hattenheim, Nassau, and arrived per "Armin" Sydney 1858 and are said to have had children, Catherine and 'Frances', with them upon arrival. (Sussanna was HEEPER nee STRASHAMER.) Carl worked initially as a tinsmith at Kirchnerstadt and then continued in his trade in Grafton.
