Anne, What do you mean by chauffer drivers? Within the military all senior officers including the officer commanding or commanding officer of a unit is and always has been driven by a unit driver. Usually the transport officer appoints a COs Driver from among his/her drivers. Sometimes the CO selects a driver for some specific reason. In WW2 some blokes considered it a privilege to be the COs drivers and that became their claim to fame. In some instances this driver also acts as the COs batman. Depending on the appointment, other ranks within the system have drivers. For example as the quarter master sergeant of a unit I had a driver . The civilian system works similar but they took their drivers from within the public service. Hope this helps.
