One last note on name changes, as anyone who's been doing family history research for any length of time quickly finds out, how a name is spelt depends to a great degree on the literacy and attitute of the person recording the information. I have one family with 12 children and a mixture of germanic-souding and anglicised names. It seems likely to me that on being told the child's name is say 'Johannus Friedrich' that the official, deciding that a child born in Australia should have an English sounding name, could arbitrarily record the name as John Frederick. Just a theory mind, but I can find no other ryhme or reason for it.
