Hi Sorry about duplicate posting but just trying to get the word out. } There will be two reunions coming up for the Kapernick Family. The first one will be held at the Lutheran Church Hall, 85 Spencer St, Gatton on 18 September 2010. The other will be the following weekend on 25 September at the Lutheran Church Hall, Thorn St, Murgon at 10 Am. Descendants can attend whichever is most convenient for them. There will be a barbie at both. Cost $10 for single, $15 couple, $20 for a family of four consisting of two adults and two children under 16. Please bring photos and any family memorabilia. The idea is really to get together stories for the Kapernick Family History Book and flesh out the tree. Regards Chris
Hi there I was wondering if anyone else had the idea I had? MySpace, Facebook and other social networking sites such as Bebo could be used for family history research. I am sure many have thought of it but thought I would post it here as an idea. I have had particular luck with Facebook as it caters to a slightly older more professional market, whereas MySpace caters for teens, bands and movies. Just look up your names on the site- of course it works best with less than common names. For example, I know that all the Kapernicks in Australia are related so I wrote to each of the 100 or so that have profiles on Facebook and also Bebo and MySpace. Even with common names like Smith it can be useful when you have a full name- like Stacie Louise Smith. There is only one! I found some of my Smith-Kapernick relatives that way. Its worth a shot and it is cheaper than mailout. I guess a lot of people dont respond and you send out a 100 messages you get maybe ten responses. However, those responses are worth while- and you did not spend $55 in postage to get them! For the less up with modern technology and would like more advice on using these sites, feel free to ask. ] Bye thye way, if anyone is on facebook and wants to ad me as a friend- particularly those who I have regular contact with- please feel. My url is www.facebook.com/chris.schmidt66. I have not got much info about me there- never had time to do it. Regards Chris
Hi everyone! A Kapernick family history book will be released in March next year. The cost will be kept down to $35.00. I thought there may be some people on the list other than Lorrae ( I already have you down, Lorrae) would that would like a copy, please email me and I can send you an order form. After all, us Kapernick families connect with almost every German family in south-east Qld. Payment will not be required until the book is released Regards Chris

Please send all emails to the list to aus-qld-se-germans@rootsweb.com Lorrae Glenore Grove Qld 4342 http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=helmrich _____ From: mailman-bounces@rootsweb.com <mailto:mailman-bounces@rootsweb.comSubject> Subject: Patterson arrival on David McIver Dear Kay, I am most interested in your re-editing the book written about Maryborough and wish to offer my family details. My great-grandfather, William Patterson arrived from County Down, Northern Ireland with his wife Margaret Emerson on the David McIver at Hervey Bay 9 July 1863. They left two sons, William James and George behind when they sailed to Queensland and it is known that these two boys arrived later. However I do not know the name of the ship on which they arrived in Queensland. William James married Elizabeth O'Mara of Maryborough and George married Elizabeth Angus of Bundaberg. William and Margaret went on to have Thomas (my grandfather) dob 1865 at Iderway, Gayndah. Thomas consequently married Anna Catherine Heiner (mother Amalia Weimer (Whymer?) then followed Robert born Mt Perry with wife unknown. Another son, John followed with most details unknown. Finally a daughter born at Mt Perry to William and Margaret named Margaret who married a James Duffin. It is believed there was another child (details of which are unknown.) As mentioned I am very interested in your book and wondered if the family of Pattersons (although we now spell it Patteson) and Weimer (Whymer?) are among those you have researched etc! Thank you with much interest, Glenva
Many Thanks Jane for the information. It is the person I was looking for. Wonderful. Regards, Kay
For Martyn Smith. (Aldine History Qld written 1888 by W. Frederic Morrison) J. W. HOBSON AND CO., Engineers, Iron and Brass Founders, Pioneer Foundry, have a business which was established in 1876 by Mr. John Deane, from whom they purchased it in October, 1885. Since this year great improvements have been made in the concern, workshops have been extended, and improved machinery introduced. The work carried on is principally the making and repairing of mining machinery, the present plant being a very extensive one, including four lathes, shaving machine, and rolling and punching machine, all of which are worked by steam supplied from a ten horse-power boiler. They employ, on an average, from eighteen to twenty hands, the business being the most important of its kind on the field, for during its existence the majority of the mines have been supplied with machinery. The foundry is replete with modern appliances. It contains fitting shop 110ft. by 36ft.; moulding shop, 40ft. by 42ft.; dressing and core shop, 16ft. by 50ft.; and blacksmiths shop, 20ft. b! y 20ft. William Hobson was born in 1836 in Lancashire, and arrived in Melbourne in 1862. He worked in Victoria for about fourteen years, and established the Townsville Foundry, now conducted by Smalley and Burns, about twelve years ago. In 1885 Mr. Hobson's son who is also a native of Lancashire purchased the present business, which be has since carried on with every success. The works have a frontage of 112ft. by a depth of 110ft. The Gatton, Lockyer and Brisbane Valley STAR, Wednesday, May 17, 2006 - Page 3 Five generations share Emma’s 100th birthday TOOWOOMBA centenarian and former Gatton resident, Emma Muller and her two surviving eight siblings - Louisa, 98, and little brother Otto, 85 - have lived an astounding 283 years. On Sunday the spotlight was squarely on Emma. It was not only Mother's Day but it was her 100th birthday. She was surrounded by her family - spanning five generations - and her sister Louisa McAuley was by her side. Otto "Mick" Wessling, who is in a home at Brassall, wasn't well and couldn't be there. The sisters hadn't seen each other for several months. Mrs McAuley made the trip in from the Crows Nest Nursing Home to Salem Nursing Home in Hume Street. Mrs Muller was born at Ropeley near Gatton. She was the third eldest of Herman (Harry) and Emma Wessling's 11 children. She lived on the farm, attended Ropeley School and the local Baptist Church. In 1926 she married Wilhelm "Bill" Muller and moved to Murgon, but returned to Gatton where they established the well-known business, Mullers Industries, which first started selling timber in 1936. Bill died in 1959, leaving his wife with four children - Stella, Doris, Allan and Keith - plus two foster children, Neil and Norma. With Allan at the helm, and Stella and Do- ris by his side, Mullers Industries branched into irrigation in 1938, hardware in 1946 and tractors and machinery in 1954. By 1959 it employed 130 people. "Mum cooked cream cakes and made ham sandwiches for the staff and customers," Allan recalled. In 1965, Mrs Muller moved from the busi- ness site to her new home in Smith Street, Gatton, where she lived until 1996. The then 90-year-old was a keen gardener and was insistent that more gardens be established. "She loved her garden and working for the church," Allan said. In 2002 she moved to Salem Nursing Home. With failing eyesight, her biggest disappointment is that she can no longer read her Bible. By SUSAN SEARLE — PHOTO Scott Fletcher. Hello All, I was searching the South African Eastern Cape Mailing List and came across this posting. As there are many connected to the Caesar Godeffroy and German families to all parts of the globe I thought this article appropriate reading. Regards Jenny From: "Mark Pautz" < pautzgenealogy@googlemail.com> Subject: [ZA-EC] Eastern Cape - 900 Images Date: Tue, 19 Aug 2008 00:14:31 +0100 Dear Friends, Due to work and family pressures I've had a low profile on the forum for the past year or so. Nevertheless, I have remained subscribed to all genealogy and family history lists, and have been passively "lurking" in the background! Despite flying under the radar, there have been all kinds of interesting developments over the last 12 months. On of the most important was my involvement in the events arranged to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the German Settlers in British Kaffraria. Stephanie Victor of the Amathole Museum invited me to deliver a paper at the seminar in King William's Town that was focussed on "Widening the Scope: Revisiting the Impact of the German Settlers on the Eastern Cape". The topic of my particular session was "A Personal Journey Through Genealogy". I developed an image-rich presentation and flew in from the United Kingdom to deliver it to a group of about 80 people on Saturday, July 5. I shared the spotlight with Geraldine Morcom, Dr. Keith Tankard, Pastor Arthur Becker, Dr. Susan Brodrick, Gill Vernon and Stephanie Victor...and it all went remarkable well. I had a great deal of fun in the process and it was wonderful to spend quality time with people with similar obsessions! On Monday, July 7 (150 years to the day that the Caesar Godeffroy sailed into the mouth of the Buffalo River carrying the first group of agricultural settlers from Germany), I also attended Dr. Keith Tankard's session at the Courtenay-Latimer Hall at the East London Museum. Keith presented a preview of his forthcoming book "Broken Promises" which looks at the German Settler Immigration programmes that included the Military Settlers, the Agricultural Settlers and the Kennaway girls. It was fascinating evening...and the networking opportunity was superb! I returned to the UK on a high, and wondered what I could do to share just a little of that excitement with those of you who were not able to be a part of the events. Well, over the last month or so, I have uploaded almost 900 high-resolution photos to my Flickr account in a folder I've called "British Kaffraria". Included you will find: * Circa-600 photographs from my visit to the Eastern Cape in 2008. * Circa-300 photographs from my visit to the Eastern Cape in 2005. * Photos of tombstones in the cemeteries in King William's Town, Braunschweig, Macleantown, Berlin and Potsdam. * Memorials in King William's Town and East London. * Buildings of significance to my research in all of the places listed above. * Photographs of newspapers from the Daily Dispatch archive in the East London Central Library. * Scans of 150th anniversary documentation. * A scan of the Daily Dispatch article based on the interviews conducted with Keith Tankard and myself. * Photos of the seminar in King William's Town and Keith Tankard's book launch in East London. * Historical documents photographed in the Amathole and East London Museums. * A few family shots and lots of nice scenic stuff. I still have loads more material to post (going back many more years) but who knows how long it's going to take me to add all of that! So, in the interests of getting things out and sharing, please feel free to dig in here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/anjinsan/sets/72157606132551289/ In the northern hemisphere we are spoiled with inexpensive, high quality broadband connections, and so I have no idea how this will work for those of you with slow dial-up connections in SA. You can click on each of the thumbnails to open up a larger version of the shot, and a (sometimes fairly detailed) description of what you're looking at. However, my recommendation for an evening's light entertainment would be to grab a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon, to click the "Slideshow" button at the top-right of the screen and to sit back and enjoy the show! I have also uploaded three video clips from Dr. Keith Tankard's most excellent book preview in East London - take a look here: * http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=2554562735973178957&hl=en * http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3303240367045625973&hl=en * http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4903085347621881283&hl=en Finally, please take a look at some of my recent, related blog entries at: * http://malfark.blogspot.com/2008/07/song-of-germans-in-south-africa.html * http://malfark.blogspot.com/2008/05/pioneering-spirits.html Enough for tonight - it's late!
