Thanks so much Janet and Jennifer . The Bausite connection is the one I am trying to make. The age is about right (should be 72 or 73) Father's name on death cert is all wrong, if it's her, but that may be down to the informant. The Christopher Daniel Kummerfeld from the Bausite list died in Maryborough in 1870 but was step-father to the family. She was born Abel Grotherr, third of four children to Anna and Reinke Grotherr (Sr). It would not be the first time I have seen young females retain the name they entered the country with, for their lifetime; while their brothers revert to their actual father's name Unless by some dark coincidence she also married (de-facto?) a Kummerfeld. (I note that the Johann Heinrich Kummerfeld was also born Holstein, c.1849) I think thiswould be the only way to link her to the one in Biggenden. But what chance there would be two of that name pretty much in the same district? Is the Biggenden Abel still on the roll after 1917? Thank you for your kind offer, Janet, I can wait until Wednesday. I have not seen all messages on this topic, so forgive me if someone has already said this... Some shipboard diaries can be located via Trove, www.trove.nla.gov.au. See also Nicholson's books entitled 'Log of Logs'. Colonial Secretary's Office correspondence (State archives) may also be useful. Warren you said, > Sounds like generic type information. Why would you expect it to be much > different for other migrant vessels?< I'm not sure to whom your posting was addressed, but generic information is not really good enough if there is specific information available. If you have read any records of voyages, logs, diaries, Surgeon's reports you would see that the experiences of the passengers was different, depending on the ship on which ship they travelled. Most Captains and most Surgeons had concern for their passengers, and they ensured the passengers had plenty of exercise and ate healthily avoiding scurvy, and their quarters were clean and fresh, the latrines emptied and washed with carbolic soap. Other's were not so conscientious, and I'd be interested in knowing what my ancestor experienced. Gay ----- Original Message ----- From: "

Here I was, hoping Janet's email would enlighten us.. Can we all share this information or link, sent off list please Janet, or was it relevant only to Norm and his ship. I was thinking that catering may have been similar across other ships..particularly the Godeffroy line? Information sent off line Janet ----- Original Message ----- From: "Norman BUSING" <normbus@actrix.gen.nz>
Hi Lorriane, I was recently researching my ancestors voyage from Hamburg to Moreton Bay on vessel Caesar Godeffroy in 1862 and learnt some very interesting details about life on baord immigration vessels, descriptions of the legal boat designs, toilets requirements and locations, food and medicine rations and the duties of The Cook, The Baker, The Teacher etc and also listed the daily/weekly rations/provisions provided to each passenger. One document states that the following were the weekly rations for each passenger on voyages expected to exceed 84 days: 3 quarts of drinking water daily 10 gallons per 100 passengers per day for cooking purposes. 3 lbs, 8 ozs Bread or biscuit (not of quality inferior to Navy biscuit) 2 lbs wheaten flour 1 lb oatmeal 1lb rice 1 lb peas 1lb potateoes 1 lb beef. 1 lb pork 2 ozs tea 1 lb sugar 2 ozs salt 1/3 ozs mustard 1/4 ozs salt and pepper ground 1 Gill vinegar 1 Gill lime juice 1 lb preserved meat 6 ozs suet 8 ozs raisins 4 ozs butter It also states that cooks were provided to cook the food that required cooking for passengers or that families could arrange to use on of several family stoves to cook for themselves. I also recall reading elsewhere that before departure each family had to purchase a "travelling kit" which included things like pots, utensils, blankets and soap etc for use on the voyage. If this is the type of information your interested in then please get in touch and I will point you in the right direction.
