    2. Christmas is coming, the turkeys are getting fat, Put a penny in the old man's hat. If you haven't got a penny, a ha'penny will do, If you haven't got a ha'penny, may God bless you. At Christmas, play and make good cheer, For Christmas comes but once a year. Most all the time, the whole year round, There 'aint no flies on me, But jest 'fore Christmas I'm as good as I can be. I will honour Christmas in my heart and try to keep it all the year. Merry Christmas and Happy "hunting" to one and all Regards Cynthia Zimpel

    2. Janice Nightingale
    3. One last note on name changes, as anyone who's been doing family history research for any length of time quickly finds out, how a name is spelt depends to a great degree on the literacy and attitute of the person recording the information. I have one family with 12 children and a mixture of germanic-souding and anglicised names. It seems likely to me that on being told the child's name is say 'Johannus Friedrich' that the official, deciding that a child born in Australia should have an English sounding name, could arbitrarily record the name as John Frederick. Just a theory mind, but I can find no other ryhme or reason for it. 3. Hi Everyone Sorry to be a bit behind on this subject but I thought I would let you know of a reason for a name change in one of my german ancestors first names. My ggreat uncle's name in Aust was Frank but I found out a few months ago that his german birth name is spelt Focho. When I found out how this name is pronounced in german (the first 'o' has an english 'u' sound) I could understand why he changed it to Frank. Pronunciation (and what words they may sound like here) could be another reason for a name change too. Regards Faye Queensland Australia

    1. Birth Certificate numbering
    2. Mr Kerry Muller
    3. Hi All, Just curious on the numbering system of B/Cert's. As an example, my own birth certificate has in the top right hand side E68343. Year is 1962. In main content, it has 1. Number - 15792. Is this recorded as 1962/E68343 or 1962/15792. Many thanks, Kerry

    1. Holiday Wishes to you all
    2. Beverly
    3. It is now a little over 2 weeks until the Big White Boomers haul Santa through the Australian summer night to drop goodies on the sun porch for the children. I would like to take the opportunity to wish you all a pleasant holiday season. That is the politically correct greeting that is touted as being not offensive to any race or creed. 2001 began with an argument as to whether it was actually the beginning of the new milennium or was new year 2000 the beginning? As this year unfolded many of us had family reunions and we worked frantically to gather the family information for the events. The terrorists crashing into the World Trade Center buildings caused more than dust, rubble and fires. It caused families to draw closer together and to appreciate one another more and to over look the petty squabbles. My wish for all of us is that we spend more time loving our families than buying them presents that will in time fall apart or wear out. How about a present for your ancestors? Find one more of them for inclusion in the family database for Christmas 2001. I would like to thank the list members who help those with queries. Nothing feels better than to find the place each person fits in the family. cheers and best wishes to you all, Beverly Markham, listowner SEQ Germans. 3. It seems that once again it is time to day all those nice things we are supposed to say to each other at this time of year. I would like to say Thank You to all those who have contributed so much material to this list over the year. I would also like to say that through the list I have formed some wonderful friendships and even found a few relatives that I never knew existed. I hope that one day soon we might meet in person. I especially enjoyed meeting Lorrae last July and sharing some time with her. I look forward to meeting many more in 2002. Can I say thank you to Beverly for the list and to all of you I wish all the best. Thank you and looking forward to 2002 and hopefully I might even get started on the book which I planned before I started on this project. Started three years ago with an idea and no information, now I have a stack of information and no idea where to start. Love and greetings to all my fellow listers. 3. Jim and list, About a week ago I received an infected email with the subject line "Markham, Pelling, Tranby" and it appeared to have been sent by Jim Crighton. My computer had previously been infected with the Bad Trans Virus by a similar email sent from someone else on the list. After much trial and tribulation, I managed to remove the virus but the experience had been so traumatic to me that I have since then refused to open any attachments with or without the pop up screen warning me of the presence of a virus. In the case of the email supposedly sent by Jim to my computer, the pop up screen informed me that it was unsafe to open the email. In an effort to contact Jim I put a note on the list to him. I apologise to him for any inconvenience it may have caused him. This virus problem has been the cause of much anxiety on the part of many people on the list. Since not all of us are computer literate enough to deal with every problem that arises, may I urge the folks on this list to go to the site mentioned by Warren a couple of days ago which will help us all understand how this virus works. The information there may also help unruffle a few feathers. cheers, Beverly. Life on Earth is Expensive, but at least you get a free trip around the sun....... So wear a hat and enjoy the ride!

    3. Bev, Thanks that would be marvellous. Can you email scanned images? If not I'm happy to pay for copying and postage cost. If so, I'll email you direct with postal address. I wish I could find something definative. The man was either a saint or a sinner, depending on which documents you refer to. Lots of opinion- little fact. I guess when it comes down to it he was probably just like the rest of us- a little of both.
