    1. Re: Church membership etc.
    2. Hello all, I was looking at a microfiche today and found some of my people on the fiche. I was surprised to see that they were married in the Methodist Church. They were staunch Lutherans, but then I discovered that the Methodist Church was the only church building around and that all religions used it for weddings, christenings and burials but their own particular ministers officiated in the ceremonies. Guess that really underlines the phrase "community church" by the use of the building by all those in the community. I wonder how they managed on Sunday if each religion used the building for church service? Have other people run across this 'multi use' of existing church buildings by people other than the resident congregation? just wondering, Beverly.

    3. Hi all I have the following Family Tree books - always on the lookout for more. I will do lookups if sufficient details are given, but please note that a lot of the books do not give details of BDM and some list only given name as known by - ie Mina for Wilhelmina. Most do not have indexes, especially the earlier ones, but by entering 'some' details from all books where related to my relations, or covered in more than two books, I have been able to establish a large database and have therefore got details that may have been missing from one book. 2. Tom & Lorrae Johnson
    3. Thank you Beverly for the offer to take over your great list. I will endeavour to keep it running as it has been, as I have enjoyed the 'comardarie' of this list immensely, (my jests, not withstanding). So from 1 August, I do not see any changes and I look forward to Beverly's continued input, and updates on the grandbub. Lorrae -----Original Message----- From: Toetweaker@aol.com [mailto:Toetweaker@aol.com] Sent: Wednesday, 24 July 2002 3:01 PM To: AUS-QLD-SE-Germans-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Welcome Lorrae About 5 years ago I applied to Rootsweb for a new list to be started and that is how the Germans of South Eath Queensland list began. I felt that we needed a place for all the descendants of the Germans who settled South East Queensland. It has been a great experience and I have learned a lot from the people on the list and have tried to help where I could. The time has come for me to bow out. We are soon to be grandparents and I will be travling a lot and therefore not be able to take close care of the needs of the list. I have asked Lorrae Johnson to take over the list and she has graciously agreed to do this. Her list admin job begins the first of August. Over the years, Lorrae has contributed a lot to the list and has been a great help to a lot of people. I am grateful for her willingness to be of help to the listers. I had the opportunity to meet her in person on my trip to Australia last year and I can tell you that you will all be in good hands. Lorrae, I wish you well and I know that you will do a good job. Thank you to the listers who contribute to the list and who help others with their research. It has been a pleasure meeting you all on line, and meeting some of you in person. I am glad that I had this opportunity to be list admin. cheers, Beverly Markham, Prescott, Arizona, USA. ______________________________

You have made everybody particularly welcome and have stimulated fertile discussion and great comeraderie within the group. I look forward to your continued contributions especially the grandmotherly bits. Congratulations to Lorrae. Your contributions give much strength to the list. 1. DANKER
    2. Mike Power
    3. Hello Listers I'm researching a Johann Frederick DANKER was born in 1829 in Milow (near Rathenow) Prussia. His father was William Frederick DANKER, mariner; his mother Sophy OHM. He emigrated per the "Aurora" which, on its arrival on 14 March 1855, was wrecked on Moreton Island. He commenced work for the Archer brothers and was one of their overland party which settled Rockhampton in late 1855. He initially lived in Gladstone but eventually returned to Rockhampton. He worked as a cabinetmaker, specializing in billiard tables.. On 1 Jan 1863 he married Amelia RICE in Rockhampton. She was born in London in 1842 to William Rice and Caroline Reading and had arrived in Queensland on the "Rajasthan" in Nov 1862, together with her sister Charlotte. The Danker's had nine children, all born in Rockhampton: Matilda Amelia Sophia (born 10 Mar 1864) married Isaac MURRAY (Rockhampton, 27 Mar 1889) resided Cairns (died ?); Frederick William Ferdinand (b 2 Jan 1866) m Clara SALISBURY (Rockhampton, 1891), resided Perth (d 27 Mar 1925); August Adolph Edward (b 14 Aug 1867) m Eleanor WILLIAMS (Hobart, 20 June 1895) resided Cairns, Coolgardie, Perth then Sydney (d 1922); Cleopatra Goldina Mount Wheelerina (b 23 Dec 1869) m Arthur WHITE (Broad Arrow, 1899) resided Coolgardie then Sydney (d 1933); Charles Albert Henry (2 Mar 1872) m Annie ELPHINSTONE (Perth, 1901) resided Perth then Cue (d 15 Nov 1958); John, b 1877, died Rockhampton, 1878 Constance Caroline Anna (b 15 Jan 1875) m William Francis POWER (Rockhampton, 4 Mar 1903) resided Sydney (d 1940); Charlotte Emma Clara (b 13 Apr 1879) m George MCNICOLL (Rockhampton, 29 Sept 1902) resided Durban, South Africa (d 1969); Lilian Adelina Wilhelmina DANKER (b 17 Sep 1883) m Unknown WOOD (?) resided New Zealand, South Africa, New Zealand (d ?). None of Johann and Amelia's three surviving sons were to have sons survive them; hence the name-line has died out in Australia. In the mid 1890's a large number of the Danker family including Johann and Amelia, moved to the Coolgardie goldfields. The two parents eventually moved to Sydney where they died, Johann in 1916 and Amelia in 1920. Regards Mike Power

G'day Patricia, It's quite easy, look him up on the Nominal Roll of the A.I.F. who served overseas. This is in microfiche form, and now in most family history libraries. On the internet - go to http://www.awm.gov.au/database/ then click onto First World War Nominal Roll. This will ak you to enter a surname, do that, a list of various fiche will come up, generally in alphabetical order by christian names. Select the appropriate one by clicking on the red number, and scroll down the page. If he is not there, check pages before and after, as sometimes they are not in strict alphabetical order. You can then order a copy of his service records. Best Wishes Phillip MURPHY

    3. Sorry Don I did not see my comments as 'negetive' though I would understand that you might. As a point, anyone using rootsweb search engine has a chance of finding your email by anyone of the surnames you listed in your email. Thus as rootsweb is worldwide, the address was "flashed worldwide". Notwithstanding, I had spent in excess of 10 hours checking your database against names on my database, even making TWO direct connections with yours. One email was to this list advising that I would contact you offlist, which I did in FOUR separate long emails giving you further details from the information I had on my database. There was considerable time spent comparing your data with mine and organising the emails. I will also add that I included the 'living' in the details I sent to you. Your sharing is appreciated by many, and to understand our 'negative' reactions to having our details on the 'web' when we are prepared to include them in books must seem very unrealistic. However, in this day of electronics, when the mother's maiden names and dates of births are used as identification by many organisations, and with the recent 'bank scams', people become paranoid (maybe unnecessarily) but that is human nature and what makes us all so fascinating. Please do not get discouraged by the 'negetive' replies and I hope the other emails you have received will include more data for your research. While I have not yet had time to have a look through them, I wish to first reply to your second paragraph. The website has not been "flashed worldwide" as you state. It is NOT LISTED in any search engines, the url is not listed on any other website, and in less than a weeks time it WILL NO LONGER EXIST. The only place it has been documented or advertised is in the rootsweb mailing list, for the express purpose of inviting interested people to add to or access genealogy records, which I believe is the whole purpose of this mailing list. I accept that many people do not wish to have their details made public, and while I may not agree with it, other websites that I have had in the past and will have in the future DO NOT SHOW DETAILS of living individuals. In this specific instance I believe that I am justified in showing these details for the reasons previously mentioned - that access is targeted to specific interested people and that it is short-term. I do not intend or wish to cause offence to you or anyone else, I only wish to explain my actions, and will be happy to continue this discussion off-list if you so desire.
