    3. Hello List, I appreciate the info on the La Rochelle. I have a copy of one page of the original passenger list for La Rochelle 1865 to Moreton Bay. It is hand written so my interpretation of names may not be accurate. . Apart from my own SCHUBERT family, the following families are listed:- Johan ANDRESEN, wife and two children. August GURVELS/GARVELS?? Hans BOOCK Peter WENGEL Peter GALL Christian LAMPRECHT, wife? and one child. Carl DAHM, wife and two children. Hans HEUER, wife and three children. Wilhelm GRABS, wife and one child. Hans FUNK, wife and two children. K......MANSKEY/MANTHEY accompanied by other family but those names listed on the next page, which I of course haven't got. The shipping list shows names, ages, town, country occupation. If anyone would like this information don't hesitate to ask. Christine Ross. ----- Original Message ----- From: John Harkin <harkin@pencc.org> To: <AUS-QLD-SE-Germans-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, September 17, 2002 11:44 PM Subject: [Qld -SE-German] La Rochelle >>. > > ...........................For a long time I could not find any information on the La Rochelle. 2. Dear Christine, thanks for the information. It is not a HEUER that is in my family. My GGGrandfather's brother Carl married a HEUER but she apparently died just before they left Germany for the USA. He travelled to the USA with 3 little boys all under the age of abt. 10yrs old. That must have been a handful trying to keep three boys occupied for such a long journey. I know how it was taking 2 kids on a long flight. I was ready to have one of them go for a walk on the wings...............so I can only let my imagination run amok with the trip on a boat. I have heard that they held school for the children - if that is correct, then it may not have been so bad. cheers, Beverly.

    3. I would like to know what you have on the TEWS. I am descended from Martin Tews/Henriette Muller. This family farmed at Pittsworth. Marg McN Toetweaker@aol.com wrote:Dear List, It has occurred to me that since at least 3 people from this village migrated to Queensland, that it is entirely possible that there were others. I have to hand 13 certificates (all told) comprising baptism and marriage certificates, from the villages of Hohenselchow and of Woltersdorf and of Grosse Pinnow, and of Casekow, and I am going to put the names of the witnesses to the baptisms of my family in the hope that some of you may also have ancestors from Hohenselchow, Casekow, Pinnow or Woltersdorf, Kreis Randow, Germany. It might be nice to know that they all lived together before going to Australia (at least one went to America). The villages of Hohenselchow, Casekow, Pinnow are within 5km of each other according to the map. Woltersdorf is a little further to the south east. All these villages are north east of Berlin and close to the River ODER, which comprises the German/Polish border. The regional seat of government seems to have been Stettin (Szczecin). It was noted by the pastor who compiled these certificates that the family seems to have moved around a lot. They were farmers, and in my opinion, it is entirely possible that they hired out to wichever farmer happened to need workers. Perhaps this assumption is not true but it is a plausible explanation of why some of the TROST children were born in Hohenselchow, some in Pinnow and some in Woltersdorf. here are the names from the certificates. 2. John Harkin
    3. Hi Sue from Ipswich, I have relatives who died on the La Rochelle. My connection is the young orphaned Wittmann children who came with Johan George Bauer (age 17) from Dorzbach in Wurttemberg. There was Maria Catherina (age27) who married Johan George (Heinrich) Hoffmann (Age28). Their family Maria Magdalena (Lena)(age 6), Johan Leonhard (age 2) and Margaretha (Mary)(age 1). Johan George (Heinrick) Hoffmann died at sea on 23/09/1865 and was buried at sea. I have his death certificate, which is marked "mar" this means he died at sea. It has the latitude and longitude. and cause of death and time and date of burial. His young son Johan Leonard (not Bernard as shown on the ship passenger list) died after a long illness in the Quarantine Station in Moreton Bay on 18/02/1866 I have his certificate. The rest of the family John (age 19), Maria Margaretha (age16) and Christine Catherina (age16) who married Carl Weinert. This family is the only one I have not bee able to complete. Any helpers? A good introduction to Queensland for some young children. . For a long time I could not find any information on the La Rochelle. I was told the ship details were lost in the Queensland Archives in 1922 due to a flood. I then discovered Eric Kopittke book on "Emigrants from Hamburg to Australia" so I was able to obtain all my details from his book. These records are from German records of people who left on the ship. There were 62 people who died on the La Rochelle. I have a copy of an inquiry on the La Rochelle. A Queensland relative gave it to me and on the top of the pages it says " Hamburg Passenger Lists" and is from page 59 to page 68 of this book. This could be one of Eric Koppitke books. I do not have the findings of the inquiry as the last page states "This being all the evidence forthcoming, the inquiry was adjourned until the release of the immigrants per Wandrahm from quarantine, which is expected to take place in about a week". I have looked up in the Victorian State Library the Courier Mail from 26/12/1865 to 22/2/1866. This is the dates covered in the inquiry, and after that date but I could not find any further details. I have searched in the Queensland Archives and cannot find any details of the La Rochelle inquiry. You have a hard job to find out who died on the ship. 2. John, I read with interest your efforts to research the possible enquiries into the deaths on the La Rochelle. I wonder if the inquiry into the deaths got lost in the shuffle, so to speak? If these many deaths took place in today's society, I wonder if the results would be much different? One of my cousins looked into the history of the Germans on the Downs and he came across a couple of items in the Toowoomba Chronicle that dealt with happenings/disasters. It was interesting to me that the paper just said "A German was washed over the bridge when the river flooded" and "A German was run over by a horse and cart as it bolted down the street". I find it interesting that the paper did not put in the name of the person but just the nationality - it seems as though these were expendible persons from the community and did not warrant identification. Rather a sad commentary on the value of human life and humans in general. Did it make the person less human because he was a "German"? The collection of articles my cousin had were eye openers to be sure. cheers, Beverly.

    3. Hi Hazel, My husbands family the Rück came from Kupfer on the La Rochelle in 1865, did all your family survive the trip? I know a lot of people died in the voyage, as there is no record of the deaths, as I see people on the list, who family travelled on the La Rochelle, I am checking to try and compile a list. I know a lot died and were buried in South Africa, some buried at sea and some at Dunwich. The ship arrived Xmas Day into Cape Moreton, and came to anchor in the Brisbane River on the 27th December, but it was Feb 21st in 1866 before most of the passengers were released from Quarantine. 2. John Harkin
    3. ------------------------------------------------------ A few weeks ago there was a query about churches sharing with other chuches. In my adopted town of Frankston we have a Lutheran Church who sold their church in a new shopping development. They now share a church with the Uniting Church. They have an elaborate sign painted by a signwriter which states Uniting Church 9-30 am Sunday etc and underneath Lutheran Church 11 am Sunday etc. My ggrandfather John Wittmann built a church on his property in Coolabunia in the 1890 which was used by various denominations. My wife is a fully ordained pastor and she started a church in a school hall and was transferred after three years to join a bigger church. The church is still going quite strongly. I am afraid there are not too many church services held in churches, but rather in public halls etc. John Harkin. ------------------------------------------------------ InterNet Australis http://www.australis.com.au/

    1. Re: Names from Hohenselchow, Kreis Randow, Germany
    2. Sue, I don't know the name of the ship they came o n. Wish I did. Their ship docked on Peel Island around 3 November 1878. The mother gave birth to their last child around 10th November 1878 but she died on 18th November 1878. Pretty sad tale told here. This couple also lost at least one child while at sea. It makes me wonder at the conditions under which they must have sailed. Must have been pretty bad conditions. The more research I do, the more I am amazed that anyone survived the trip to Australia and once there, survived the harsh conditions they met there. Cleaning scrub so that a farm could be put in sounds like really hard yakka to me and I doubt if I could have survived in a slab hut, dirt floor, marauding aborigines, kangaroos eating off the kitchen garden veggies, floods, flies and snakes. (I hate flies with a passion and snakes I could do without as well). Can anyone tell me if there was more than one ship tied up at Peel Island in November 1878? The family I am looking for is Johann Carl Wilhelm TROST and his wife Caroline TROST nee LOFF. This couple were married in Hohenselchow and went to Australia in 1878 with at least 2 children that I have been able to document. A month after his wife's death, Johann married his widowed sister in law and he is also credited with sponsoring my Great Great Grandfather August Friedrich TROST and his wife Henriette TROST nee SANFT and 5 children in 1881. This family arrived on the Arthurstone. I know that it seems different that he married one month after his wife's death, but he had a few little children that needed a mother and his sister in law had a few children that needed a daddy and I am sure that life in early Australia was tough enough for a couple with children, and even tougher if you were single with little children to take care of into the bargain. I do not envy my ancestors one bit. cheers, Beverly.

    3. Hi all There are increasingly messages with signatures of longer than 4 lines. These are not only bad netiquette but also take up valuable space at rootsweb archives. Rootsweb has asked us to remind posters and I have been negligent in my duty of listowner up to now. I ask you all to look at your signature and if it is in excess of 4 lines then please trim it or rearrange it. If you put your research names in your signature and it goes over the 4 lines then please ensure that they are relevant only to our list when you post messages to it and likewise for other mailing lists. This also ties in with the request to delete a large potion of the original message but leave enough to enable someone to follow the thread. Especially, please delete the 'beget' sections of the original email. Thank you all for your continued support of 'rootsweb' and the support they continue to give us.
