Hi Albert, As checks on my computer don't show up any virus (God willing), I have no real idea about where the bogus messages come from, but in trying to understand what could have happened, I noted the following from the last Rootsweb Review which makes me think some someone, somewhere on this list may have inadvertently picked up a virus: "Concerned about protecting your e-mail addresses from address harvesters and spammers in the Mailing List archives? Note that when you view a message in the Threaded Mailing Lists archives you see a normal e-mail address, but if you right-click anywhere on the page and select "view source" from the menu that appears, you will see that the e-mail addresses are encrypted and look something like: "uYTH." That is the source code that address harvesters see -- not the page as you normally view it. Addresses in the RootsWeb Interactive Searchable archives are displayed as dynamic pages created on the fly (as opposed to static permanent webpages) that are not accessible to address harvesting "spiders." These safeguards protect your e-mail address from harvesting by spammers as they do not take the time to gather addresses manually, which would be required otherwise." I guess the point is that the genealogy world is being targetted for spammers etc. Most annoying to say the least. Cheers Marionne

Dear Listers I have updated following pages on the Mackay Historical Society and Museum Inc. Research Website. I have just started a section on the locations and brief history of the cemeteries around the Mackay District. Be patient as I have just commenced and more updates will be added. Do Not contact me with any queries regarding Monumental Inscriptions or burial registers as we do not have those records. These pages are only included as to the locations of these cemeteries and history of them. The most appropriate people to ask for any details of Monumental Inscriptions or Burial Registers would be the Mackay Family History Society, Po Box 882, MACKAY QLD 4740. There are times when I have little sympathy for some of our listers - for they do not read all of the message.......Bev stated early in her message various column headings to match up with the data she included beneath the headings. Unfortunately, Rootsweb doesn't allow us to maintain the same formatting, and so sometimes data like this becomes scrambled.........as for "Cookies Gate" and "Selector" whwich should be in two separate columns, "Cookie's Gate" obviously refers to a gateway in a fence line, which was probably a boundary fence belonging to George Cooke, one of the first Goombungee School Committee members along with William King, John Pieters, Henry Skuse, and J.W. Jull. and a selector is a person who selects.........see, easy when you read it correctly.................... regards Jim

Hi Phil and others, I hope you are incorrect about the height of Drayton Harbour, as Toowoomba is just over 2000 feet above sea level, and you have it a further 10000 feet above that, should be heavenly, by the way. Quoting from the book "A Folk History of Early Drayton and Toowoomba" by Jacob Donges re the 1893 floods , he says - The big flood of 1893 did great damage in Toowoomba in common with all the rest of Queensland. The rainfall in Toowoomba for the month of February of that year was 28.96 inches, most of it falling in the first half of the month. All the bridges were damaged and some were swept away, and the roads suffered very severely. Naturally this placed a heavy burden on the ratepayers. The heavy flood rains in Queensland in january - February 189, can be gauged from the weather reports at the time - to mention only a couple, Mooloolah had 67 inches in three days, Crohamhurst, 105 inches from 1st january to 11 February inclusive, Toowoomba's rainfall in January and February, that year was 35.5 inches with the rainfall for the year being 68.33 inches. The washing away of the Indooroopilly and Victoria Bridges in Brisbane disrupted traffic to and from Toowoomba and the coast and caused a considerable rise in the cost of living which lasted some time. there was also much unemployment at the time. In addition to the flood calamity, 1893 was the year when eight out of eleven of Queenland's banks failed with the consequent disruption and disorganisation of business generally. Old hands spoke of the year with a shudder.....end of quote. Oh for a little of that kind of rain now, Please Lord........... Cheers Jim

Drayton Harbour Queensland or Drayton as it is known today is approximately 12,000 feet above sea level and a western suburb of Toowoomba. Drayton was the original and principal settlement of the region prior to the establishment Toowoomba and was colloquially known as "Drayton Harbour Because of the magnificent views of the area. For privacy, I will not go into the current material, but Margaret, you could contact me off List if you wish. There is not a great deal of which you would not be aware, in any case. Spelling etc is as per the book. ""Mr Christian (Christy) Freidrich Wilhelm Schmidt arrived in Brisbane with his parents in the sailing ship "Alster" on the 12th of August 1862, when he was almost ten years old: Soon after arrival the family moved to Roma, spending some time at Toowoomba. On returning to South East Queensland Christy and Anna purchased a block of land from Richard Deerain, (who later moved to Kerry). Christy was 19 years of age at the time, he did not stay long but moved away cane cutting at Redland Bay; later he learnt his trade of Wheel-wrighting at Beenleigh. He married Anna Wilhemena Karolina nee Buhke, Anna arrived in Brisbane aged 18months 17th March 1872, nine years after her future husband's arrival. After the Floods had destroyed their possessions at Loganholme in 1887 he came to Beaudesert with his new wife and infant son, they lived on the corner of Birnam Street where Klumpp's Cordial Factory was built. Christy carried out his profession as Wheelwright in Beaudesert. Later moving to Eaglesfield Street where they built a small home, later enlarging it to the very comfortable home which they named "Crissana". Christy died on the 29th July 1950, Anna died on the 9th February 1955. Christy and Anna has three sons: Wilhelm Fredrick (Bill) Otto C Schmidt Alfred Charles Schmidt Six daughters: Wilhemine 'Minnie' Auguste Rose Lilly Elsie Isabella Anne Phyllis"" As mentioned their is more data re spouses and children - not a great deal, but it would be useful to some.
