    3. In WW1 a Scottish lad left Queensland to fight the war in Germany, his Uncle had married a German woman in Queensland, I found out that Charles was killed in Messines Ridge on the 7th June 1917, his Uncles wife's nephew was fighting on the German side in the same battle and died on the 8th June 1917. I feel so sad these men among thousands of others lost there life, yet they were related. Sue Ipswich

    3. Yes Judy, Providing it is to do with the Germans of SEQld, it is of interest. Particularly your grandfather, who himself was a German migrant, a leader in his community, and through this leadership, helped with the migration of many German families, indeed, some settlements, and yet was still interned. From your book, it would be interesting to note which families members were interned from the various families, even more astonishing if other relatives signed up. Lorrae (PS - was the SEQld area ever defined - as far north as Maryborough, Bundaberg, perhaps Rockhampton (although I have not heard of German settlement in that area) and west as far as settlement went? -----Original Message----- From: Judy Cutts [mailto:jaycee@uqconnect.net] Sent: Sunday, 10 November 2002 6:12 PM To: Tom & Lorrae Johnson Subject: Re: "Lest we forget" Yes, my G Grandfather H F Niemeyer was interned during WW1. 2. Hi List, My comments may be a little of line, please make allowance. I still remember my father telling me that when he came back from the Middle East during WW11 and he visited his father's farm at Marburg near Ipswich, he was very surprised and annoyed to find police of Irish origin visiting his father's farm and freely helping themselves to the farm produce, no payment. He raised this activity with his father and was told by him to restrain himself and ignore it. This all happened while we were still at war and my grandfather had three sons in war service and serving their country Australia. Regards Wayne

    3. Werona, My uncles and a number of other relations are listed on the roll. I don't want to appear a smart alec but there was actually two wars fought between 1939 and 1946. The first war was against the Germans in Europe and the second was against the Japanese in the islands to the north of us. Many see this as being two separate wars. I mention this because I remember a story about a fellow who owned a property out form Pittsworth. The story was that he sub-divided his property among his six sons when the German war started so they would not be able to go and shoot their cousins. When the Japanese war started he resumed most of the blocks and put share farmers on them so that his sons could go to New Guinea and fight like mad for this their own country.
