    3. G'day Alan, Thanks very much for that. One little piece of information there might explain an old family story, that the ship was fogbound in the Bay, and could not disembark. Their youngest daughter Catherine (infant, 9 months) died on the ship, again family story this held the ship up, and she was buried on Fraser Island, but, there is no other evidence that that burial actually happened. 1. Re: [SEQ-Germans] Australian born but still not Australians
    2. Chris Schmidt
    3. Hi Pardon getting perhaps a little off topic butI think Lorrae has hit a nail on the head. People fear what is unknown. Throughout the history of this great country of ours, the minority has been persecuted. In some cases even the majority- when the white man came the Aborigines were the majority. The Irish were persecuted by the British when they started coming in in droves after the potato famines, then the Chinese on the goldfields and the Afghan camel drivers and so on. We also always need someone to blame when the world is falling apart or having difficulties and we tend to blame the nearest person. Combine this with a human emotionalism and tendency to react and want revenge and we end up blaming all Germans for what a few did, all Moslems for what a few have done and so on. We stereotype and rationalise because we are afraid. Perhaps it is time that we started to embrace the different in all ways.... the disadvantaged, poor, disabled, and the ethnic minorities. Yes, migrants may hang on to some of their own tradition and customs, but wouldn't you want to if you went to a foreign land? When you are new in a country not understanding the way of life isn'tr it normal to band together with like minded people and form new communities? We ARE a great country. We need to start to celebrate the fact that multiculturalism is one of the things that have made us great- all the people from diverse lands, ethnic backgrounds and religions that have contributed so much to this country. Like John Ilhan that died recently- founder of Crazy Johns and a Turkish Moslem. Myers, another example started by a Jew from Lithuania and now back in control of the Myer family and an Australian icon. German Chief Justices and High Court judges. Captains of industry from Hungary, Ireland, Germany and almost every country of the world. After the second World War Australian industry developed on the backs of migrant workers and many of the migrants became owners of businesses and succesful themselves. When a colleague of my great grandfather came to South Australia during the first World War he noticed how backward it was. He came from New York state and he said that even though New York was cold you would have twice as mcuh on Australia in churh because heating was not common whereas everything in New York was centrally heated. The country was definitely backward in so many ways when compared with the US. I believe it is the immigration between the wars that changed that and opened us up to the world. Therefore the question can be asked where would we be without our multicukural society? Sure they need to respect the law just like any Australian born or British Australian but neither do I expect or want our migrants to become just another "throw a shrimp on the barbie aussie". I dont believe there are too many coming here who don't value our way of life and democratic values.A few but not many. So instead of reducing the number of Sudanese refugees coming here because they dont assimilate, lets embrace them and the differences they bring as a way of promoting peace and harmony around the world and have compassion. After all, we don't need less immigrants now as we have an ageing population and someone has to pay for the roads etc with our increasing years in retirement. After all, I am projected to live until 140 with the advances in medicine and health research. Just some thoughts Regards Chris --- Lorrae <[email protected]> wrote: > Hi Albert > > Australian born but still German!! > > Consider today's youth of our cities - they can > still be 2nd and 3rd generation (or even more) > Australian born, but they are still labelled as > Indian, Italian, Chinese or whatever their > ancestors were. > > The hate crimes that happened in the Sydney suburbs > were committed by Australian born youth, but > they did not consider themselves Australians, they > took their grandfather's nationality - or their > 'home country'. > > "I was born here, this is my home" - but our > anscestors did not embrace the Australian language > (english), the Australian ways or customs, they > brought their own customs and clung to them for > several generations - including their religion - > Lutheran and Apostolic are just two of the > religions from Germany that are still practiced > today. > > > Consider today's attitude to those who do not > 'assimilate' and perhaps you can begin to see why > there was mass fear of the Germans of WW1 and WW2 > era. > > Have we learnt anything over the last 90 years? > > We feared the Germans of WW1 and the Germans and > Italians of WW2; the Koreans of the 1950's; Chinese > and Vietnamese of the 1960's; Russians and Chinese > from the cold war era; and now the Arabs who are > Muslims, who come to this great country of ours, but > will not accept our ways, our customs, our > ideals. > > All of us have ancestors who were born overseas, as > there are very few full blooded Aboriginals left > in this country.
