Jenelle. -----Original Message----- From: Dr Jennifer Lambert Tracey [mailto:jtracey@heritagearchaeology.com.au] Sent: Wednesday, August 1, 2018 3:58 PM To: aus-qld-charleville@rootsweb.com Subject: [Charleville] RILEY William - Coongoola Woolshed Fire, August 1894. Good afternoon to the List! As the new Rootsweb Admin for the Charleville list, I trust that we may be able to reinvigorate interest and get back into some revealing historical and genealogical research! Your postings to the CHARLEVILLE list would be very welcome. Please remember that the boundaries of this list extend beyond Charleville to adjacent areas. My posting below may be of interest and hopefully someone may have come across this person. If anyone has a RILEY line with ties to Queensland, particularly western and north western Queensland, I would appreciate sharing information via the list and also, my email address is noted below. I am revising information concerning my "William Riley", son of John RILEY and Sarah Florence EDWARDS, who literally drops off the planet for about 30+ years from late 1907, just after his daughter Kathleen was born. Riley was working as a stockman in Mitchell, Qld. The family, William and his wife Annie [Vincent] Riley, lived in Bowen Street, Mitchell. Riley was 31 years old in 1907 and I have a Queensland death for him at 15 August 1952. I have also found reference to a "William Riley" working as a station hand on "Gordon Downs", via Clermont, Queensland in 1936. [Qld. Electoral Roll] - so if anyone can claim him, it would help greatly in my process of elimination. RILEY William - Coongoola Woolshed Fire, August 1894 ... There is a "William RILEY" charged with having burned down the Coongoola woolshed at Cunnamulla in August 1894. This Riley subsequently murdered Ernest Henry Martyr at Wallen near Coongoola, on 14 July 1895. There are many news reports - very repetitive - about the fire and the murder, but nothing that gives any useful information about Riley other than that he was working as a shearer in Cunnamulla in 1894 and then in 1907, confessed to the murder and the fire. In 1908 the Supreme Court upheld the conviction and a death sentence imposed, later commuted to life imprisonment ["The Western Champion and General Advertiser for the Central-Western Districts"]. I look forward to your responses and my kindest regards, Jennifer Dr. Jennifer Lambert Tracey BA (ANU); M APP. SC. 2. David Fitzsimmons
    3. Hi Julieanne My ggrandfather, James Fitzsimmons was a drover in the Charleville region. He was at Oakwood station from 1879 to 1884, then Gowrie station from 1885 to 1886. He then headed west, like your Sandy Currie, and was at Retreat station nr Windorah from 1887 to 1894. He then moved to his final location which was Warbreccan near Stonehenge from 1895 to 1921. I made a list over employees at Warbreccan from the electoral rolls for the period James was there and there were two people by the name of Currie over that period, but they were not drovers. The first was Matthew Currie who was a cook from 1896 to 1897, and the second was a carpenter, Walter Currie, who was at Warbreccan in 1913. regards David Fitzsimmons On 9 June 2018 at 21:55, Dr Jennifer Lambert Tracey < jtracey@heritagearchaeology.com.au> wrote: > Hello Julieanne, > Here's hoping that we are able to help with finding more about your Thomas > Richard Currie ...'Sandy'. > Can you give the List an idea as to when he 'went out west'? > Cheers, > Jennifer > > -----Original Message----- > From: timtimt <timtimt@bigpond.net.au> > Sent: Saturday, 9 June 2018 8:05 PM > To: A mailing list for anyone with a genealogical interest in the town of > Charleville, Queensland, Australia, and the surrounding areas. > <aus-qld-charleville@rootsweb.com> > Subject: [Charleville] Re: ROLL CALL and HISTORICAL INTERESTS > > I am interested in drovers in Charleville. 3. I have a Charles Gordon who was a drover in Charleville. I found a newspaper article saying he was believed to have gone west. Never heard of again so I guess "gone west' covers it. 3. Tarina you should be able to find isabella's birth on the BDM, Queensland which is on line, you can buy and download the certificates. Have you checked the trove.nla.gov.au for stories, funeral notices and articles on the family. Your local library or historical society ight have a sub to ancestry which has electoral rolls on it. Also check war records at the www.awm.gov.au, www.naa.gov.au, www.ww2roll.gov.au Try google images, picture queensland for photos, you never know. Are your Mitchell related to the Mitchell family at Roma, (Henry Sulgar Mitchell).
