Such is genealogy... Browsing the Paddington Cemetery article recommended by Chris McGregor http://www.queenslandhistory.com/paddington_cemetery.htm) when, there she was: 'Isabella Thomasena Deacon Ferguson ... a child of a year and ten months...died on September 18 1865'. My grandfather's oldest sister! (Exquisite buzz of recognition - you know what I mean.) '...the mother being a sister of John Petrie...' What?! I don't think so! The article goes on to provide a charming anecdote about Isabella's 'father' Bob Ferguson - only thing is, I have Isabella's certificates verifying her parents as William Ferguson and Emily Deacon. Emily was the daughter of Isabella and Thomas Deacon (such determination to pass on the maternal family names - go Emily!). Both Bob Ferguson, and my great grandfather, William, were building contractors in Brisbane (maybe that's where the mix-up arose) but not related as far as I know. Isabella's mother and brothers and sisters were still alive when the article was published. Can't help wondering if there was a letter or two to the editor... Despite the author's mix-up, I thoroughly enjoyed browsing the article - especially the vivid description of the Church of England cemetery - so I'm not disappointed at all - it's just the way genealogy goes sometimes!
