    1. Re: street names changing
    2. GLEN HALL
    3. Regarding the changing of street names... It happens nearly everywhere i think.....I would hate to still have 20 John Streets in Brisbane ...think of the nightmare for the Posties.......having worked in a place where it was very common to have address's marked incorrectly and being a field officer where it was important to find the correct address I do very much agree with the idea to avoid duplication of street names....Like in Mackay we have Evans Avenue and Evan Street and Norris Street and Norris Road and many a time in my experience they have been confused by people and these are the only two in a city of 75,000 people. We had an Albert Street in Mackay till the 1930's when it was changed to Gordon Street after the confusion it created being the next street running parralel to Alfred Street..........Rather than thinking of it as council vandalism it makes common sense although from a historical point of view adds confusion when trying to locate past family. Brisbane would have been unique unlike villages in England as the city was made up of many local councils before being formed into the Great Brisbane City Council in the 1920's I think. Therefore many councils used the same name without vision in seeing or even comtemplating the growth of this city within a century. However I do think it is necessary for local historical societies to create an index for researchers noting the changes in these street names. We have one in mackay giving the history of the street names and changes and there was a book done in townsville some years ago called "highways and byways" which also gave the history of the naming of the streets in Townsville....quite a few were renamed after the Great War to honour the fallen servicemen from the district...just needs people to put heads together and develop an index...
