    2. Daniels, Sandi
    3. Hi everyone I would like to transcribe a WW1 Obituary written in a Brisbane newspaper 1917 which includes details of a letter by my great uncle Lieut. Richard (Dick) HUSBAND (Lieut. E.D.NORRIE also mentioned): The late Frank Russell Jones D.C.M. who died of wounds, October 10, 1917 was promoted to the rank of second lieutenant on September 20 and was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for coolness and gallantry and for his splendid work during an attack on September 20. He was a prominent forward of the Kelvin Grove Football Club. Mr H.C.Jones, of McIntyre street (sic)Wooloowin, has received letters of condolence from Lieut. E.D.Norrie and Lieut. Husband. The latter writes:- "It is with most heartfelt regret that I inform you of the death of your brother. It was at about 4.30pm, after successful operations had been carried out against the enemy positions on Broodscinde Ridge, Belgium, recording in the history of this great war, the fifth battle of Ypres, that the deceased officer was seriously wounded by enemy shell fire, and succumbed to his wounds on admission to the hospital that night. Myself, his fellow officers, N.C.O.'s and men of the battalion desire to tender our deepest sympathy in your sad bereavement, and would like to specially point out that the loss of such a conscientious soldier will be felt for some time right throughout the battalion. He has at all times served his colors (sic) with the utmost keenness of discipline, the various duties allotted to him were carried out with a strong soldierly spirit that earned the entire satisfaction of his superior commanders. His recent promotion to the rank of second lieutenant in the Australian Imperial Forces, and the distinction awarded him were the outcome and reward for gallantry and coolness of control in the execution of his duty on the occasion of the successful operations carried out by the Australian troops in Belgium on 20/9/17, the attack launched against enemy position in Polygon Wood." Postcsript (undated): "Lieut R.J. Husband, son of Mrs R.J.Husband, Prospect street (sic), Kangaroo Point, Brisbane, who has been on service for two years and two months, was wounded at the Somme battle. Maybe this will be interesting to someone on the list. I have a copy of the original newspaper clipping with a photograph of Lieut. Jones plus a photo of Lieut. Husband.
