Hello, Yes I have a John SMITH mystery! Surviving letters tell that John was a sea captain and also the proprietor of an Ironmonger's shop in Edward Street between Charlotte St and Elizabeth St in the 1870,s. He was also installed in the Masters Chair of Lodge No 435 Scottish Constitution on 30/11/1877. In 1878 he writes that he has sold his business and his ship will soon be ready. He next writes from California USA 1880 and has now a wife Martha and son John aged 5 and another infant son James.. I have not been able to find any record of a marriage in Aus nor any confirmation of his being a sea captain. Would be grateful for any advice Shirley S. -- No virus found in this outgoing message.
