Hi Folks, In 1874 an Alexander Chalmers and his brother Joseph were immigrants who arrive in Rockhampton. In the passenger list Alexander is listed as a Remittance passenger and Joseph as an Assisted passenger. I understand what an assisted immigrant is but what is a Remittance passenger/immigrant? NOMINATED or REMITTANCE PASSAGES: Any natural born or naturalised person residing in Queensland, desiring to provide a passage to the Colony for a friend or relative in Europe, could obtain a passage warrant from the Government on payment of the required amount. The warrant was then forwarded to the friend or relative in Europe. On presentation of the warrant, the Government representative in Europe would then arrange a passage for the emigrant. Hello Rosemary, I understand that the records are kept in Brisbane, at the Queensland State Archives, (but I could be wrong). Perhaps you could contact Judy Webster, but check out her site - www.judywebster.gil.com.au/index.html Janet ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rosemary M Chalmers" <rosechal@iinet.net.au> To: "Janet" <jmartin17@gmail.com>; <aus-qld-brisbane@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, December 13, 2008 5:00 PM Subject: Re: [AUS-QLD-BRISBANE] Qld Shipping 1874 > Hi Janet, > > How do you go about finding out who paid the remittance? > > Bye, > > Rosemary M Chalmers > Palmerston Bookkeeping Services > Darwin NT Australia
