    3. I remember the lady more from the Gold Coast in the 70's or 80's. I thought she had a dress shop, classy, but it could have been jewellery. She was a bit of a style icon I thought, but too old for me. I remember her photograph in the fashion or social pages, well dressed and made up, with spectacles and jewellery. I seem to recall that she had an earlier manifestation in, or had come from, Brisbane. I'm not yet 60 but my mum is 84. Not that she was interested in shops, but I"ll ask her anyway. Wait! There's more! I have a cousin who has been a dressmaker in Adelaide St for a hundred years. She'll know if anyone will. I'll ask her this week. Barb Smith

    3. Fabulous Barb; that's just the sort of information I was looking for. I did think it more likely that this lady SOLD jewellery rather than had a jewellery shop; a high class fashion shop sounds exactly right. Hold the presses - there's more. I just thought to check a book I have The Surfers Paradise Story by Alexander McRobbie (1982) and she gets a mention on page 49 - spelled Leila Floyd (Jewelry - sic). She is part of a list of Surfers Paradise retailers described as "solid retailers who came early and who have stayed". As the book was produced 1982 I would think that would mean she must have been at Surfers 1960's by the latest? so could have easily been in Brisbane 1940's - 50's. And so it would appear Jewellery formed at least a major part of her establishment. Many thanks for your interest. Regards Kaye
