Hi, Whilst looking at the WW1 service record of a relative on the National Archives of Australia website I found a document concerning him headed Repatriation Department and dated 1959, in which it says that my relative had lodged a claim for Repatriation benefits. He was born in England in 1885 and emigrated to Australia in 1912. Can anyone tell me whether this document means he would have been seeking help with raising funds to return to England or would it be for some other kind of benefit? He did not return to England as he died in Sydney in 1959. Hope someone can help! Pam
Hello Pam The Repatriation Department is now known as the Veterans Affairs Department and the benefits they provide are Pensions etc. They also look after the Widows of Servicemen. You may be able to get more info on the claim from the Department. Cheers Sue Coordinator of The Recordsmiths Syndicate of volunteer transcribers working for FreeBMD.
