Hi Barbara, Hope this small snippet helps - Mount Gravatt Cemetery (Records available online at Brisbane City Council website) Monumental 2E 2 114 Cumberford Margaret 21 / 02 / 1975 78 years Trask Ellen Catherine 21 / 02 / 1975 80 years Ryan John William 21 / 02 / 1975 83 years Mansfield Dorothy Mildred 21 / 02 / 1975 82 years I would guess that this is a Government grave as the persons buried seem to have all been on the same day and unrelated. >From the National Archives of Australia website John Cumberford (born Scotland) joined the Navy in 1939 and a brief record is online http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/recordsearch/index.aspx Carol
Hello Carol, How kind of you to go to the trouble to get that information for me. I so appreciate your efforts (from both emails!) If you need any lookups in Scotland...I have the 1881 census CD's and some of the MI booklets. Thank you again, Barbara Carol Wood wrote: > Hi Barbara, > > Hope this small snippet helps - > > Mount Gravatt Cemetery (Records available online at Brisbane City Council > website) > > Monumental 2E 2 114 > > Cumberford Margaret 21 / 02 / 1975 78 years > Trask Ellen Catherine 21 / 02 / 1975 80 years > Ryan John William 21 / 02 / 1975 83 years > Mansfield Dorothy Mildred 21 / 02 / 1975 82 years > > I would guess that this is a Government grave as the persons buried seem to > have all been on the same day and unrelated. > > >From the National Archives of Australia website John Cumberford (born > Scotland) joined the Navy in 1939 and a brief record is online > > http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/recordsearch/index.aspx > > Carol > > > > > > > Toowoomba Dead Persons Society > www.audps.com > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to AUS-QLD-BRISBANE-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message > ------------------------------------------------------------------------ > > > No virus found in this incoming message. > Checked by AVG - www.avg.com > Version: 8.0.237 / Virus Database: 270.11.4/1976 - Release Date: 02/27/09 13:27:00 > >
Hi Barbara (yet again) This may or may not be of interest, but I *think* two of the Cumberford boys may have played football (soccer) for Australia. The first matches Australia played were in 1922, against New Zealand. In the team for that year were Jock and David Cumberford, and in fact Jock scored the first ever goal for Australia (in a "B" international). http://www.ozfootball.net/ark/Socceroo/1922A.html http://www.ozfootball.net/ark/Socceroo/1922B.html I don't even know Jock's real name, but obviously he was a Scot :) and I did find that his club was Grange Thistle, which is in Brisbane (and also has evident Scots connections). In the immigrant list, there is a David who would be 21 in 1922; possibilities for Jock would be John (28) Alex (25) William (18). I could try to find out if you are interested. It does seem likely the footballers are the same Cumberfords, as the BDM search did not find any others of the same name in that era. Regards Steve
