Hi Listers, Can anyone tell me when offical adoptions came into effect in Qld? I have found the birth of a child listed in the Qld Birth Indexes for 1908 however I cann't find a death record for her. Nor have I found a marriage record in the online indexes which go to 1929. For the birth there was no father listed and the child took the surname of the mother. I have therefore concluded that the child was illegitimate as it is known that the mother never married. I have been in contact with a family member who is 87 years old (and would be the 1st cousin of this child if my conclusions are correct) and she has no knowledge of a peson by this name in the family. I therefore suspect that this child was adopted out either offically or privately, hence my query. Rosemary, A relative was researching a Qld illegitimate birth, with no father listed. But the certificate said WHERE the baby was born, so he went to the locality and asked at the local church and was shown the baptismal register - and the baby was there, with the father's name in the appropriate place!!! (This was in the 1890s) The baby in this case was raised by its grandmother. Maybe you could try that? Nothing to lose ... Except of course you are in Darwin! Where was the baby born, maybe someone local could help? Or some other church records? BTW, your email was apparently sent on Fri 9 Jan, and I just received it, Fri 16 Jan!!!!
