Goodday My name is Sharleen Stuart and I am researching the Cairns/Aitken connection in Brisbane. According to History, my grandmother Janet Aitken was born in Mackie, Australia. Her father was Thomas Cairns Aitken. Her mother was Annie Young Dewar. Thomas' father was Thomas Aitken and his mother was Janet Cairns, apparently both born in Brisbane. I am trying to find out more about this part of the family. From what I understand Thomas Cairns Aitken was killed in a boating accident when my grandmother was very young. Her mother later married Edward Emmanuel Reynolds and I believe, that on route back to Scotland, Annie Young Dewar Reynolds became ill and they disembarked in Durban, South Africa, where they lived until they died. I have a good deal of information on Annie Young Dewar (past on to me by a long distance family member) but nothing on Thomas and his parents. I am interested to know more about his family and whether he had sibings. If anyone could throw some light on the family I would really appreciate it. Thanks Sharleen Stuart (USA) RESEARCHING: Brough, Young, Dewar, Cairns, Aitken, Hudson, & Reynolds (Scotland, Australia, South Africa) Gatenby, Nolan, Spink, Moore, Lane (Yorkshire, London, South Africa) Stuart, De St Pern, Mason (Scotland, France, Mauritius, South Africa)

Regarding the changing of street names... It happens nearly everywhere i think.....I would hate to still have 20 John Streets in Brisbane ...think of the nightmare for the Posties.......having worked in a place where it was very common to have address's marked incorrectly and being a field officer where it was important to find the correct address I do very much agree with the idea to avoid duplication of street names....Like in Mackay we have Evans Avenue and Evan Street and Norris Street and Norris Road and many a time in my experience they have been confused by people and these are the only two in a city of 75,000 people. We had an Albert Street in Mackay till the 1930's when it was changed to Gordon Street after the confusion it created being the next street running parralel to Alfred Street..........Rather than thinking of it as council vandalism it makes common sense although from a historical point of view adds confusion when trying to locate past family. Brisbane would have been unique unlike villages in England as the city was made up of many local councils before being formed into the Great Brisbane City Council in the 1920's I think. Therefore many councils used the same name without vision in seeing or even comtemplating the growth of this city within a century. However I do think it is necessary for local historical societies to create an index for researchers noting the changes in these street names. We have one in mackay giving the history of the street names and changes and there was a book done in townsville some years ago called "highways and byways" which also gave the history of the naming of the streets in Townsville....quite a few were renamed after the Great War to honour the fallen servicemen from the district...just needs people to put heads together and develop an index... Cheers from Glen Hall Research Officer Mackay Historical Society and Museum Inc. Hi Kerry, I think that changing names of streets and roads is tantamount to council vandalism. How will we ever retain our heritage if this sort of thing is allowed to go on? There are roads and streets in England that retain the names given by the Romans, and here we are changing them willy-nilly after only a hundred or so years. There was an instance in Adelaide where the councillors changed the name of a street named after a family who last all three sons in the second world war, to that of a councillor. All he ever did was spend public money! Can't find a George St, Short St, William St, Mary St or John St somewhere in Brisbane? Well, read on ... (but note the printout was a bit faded in places so this transcription is my best guess of the revised names) From the Brisbane Courier Mail, Fri 21 Oct 1938: 100 New Names for Brisbane Streets More than 100 street names, which will be new in Brisbane, will be used, if the City Council next Tuesday adopts a works committee proposal to reduce duplicated street names. The Town Clerk (Mr Travill) and the general manager of the works, water and sewerage committee (Mr Nelson) still have several hundred more names to review. Efforts of Messrs Travill and Nelson to remove duplications of George, Short, William, Mary and John streets have resulted: George Street, city, will not be changed, but 23 other George Streets have had their names changed as follows: Gordenaux, Lockhart, Pearson, Allenby, Northey, Hailsham, Lister, Inskip and Somervell (Empire leaders), Darling, Lasgar, Duff, Rawson, Elmsie, Stopford and Lennox (Australian public men), Adsett and Agars (Australia pioneers) and from the Aboriginal list: Camboor (meaning pandanus), Carbeen (Moreton Bay ash) and Bambil (mistletoe). Short Street, city, as been retained but other changes are Bl??b and Bromley (English towns), Asabo?, Aspinall, Axford, Dennison, Backhouse, Bagot, Bedford, Bamford, Banfield and Bannister (Australian public men), Scaddan, Borden, Probyn, and Laurier (Empire leaders), Bodalla (several waters), Belar (forest oak), Darreen (acacia), Binda (deep water), Bingara (a creek), Birkal (small), Allwood, Ainslie and Atkins (Australian pioneers). Twenty-two John streets have been renamed: Rotherham and Berwick (English towns), Brownlee, Highams?, Batman, Knox, Bonython, Beeby, Evatt, Henchman, Bromilow (Australian public men), Allardyce and Rodwell (Empire leaders), Bowler, Bousefield, Broadhurst, and Cadell (Australian pioneers), Dibar (south), Adina (good), Barwon (great wide river), and Karthina (water). William Street, city, will remain but other names have been changed to Kinross and Abingdon (British towns), Wade, Gillies, Ashford, Somers, Fulier, Stonehaven, Higgs, and Fizroy (Australian public men), Bannerman, Plumer, Dew, Amery, and Willingdon (Empire leaders), Akala (a tree), Akonna (pandanus), Algoori (Moreton Bay ash), Alutha (fern), Ambool (bloodwood), Amega (tree), and Balcha (tree), and Dampier, Bass, Mort, Cunningham, and Usher (Australian pioneers). Mary Street, city, will retain its name, but other streets will be named: Daventry (English town), Barwell, Beaumont, Chubb, Brierley, Latham, and Windeyer (Australian public men), Newdegate, Strathmore, Chancellor and Merewether (Empire leaders), Beard, Beck, Bingham and Blythe (Australian pioneers), and Burral (morning), Biran (sloping), Battunga (large tree), Berrima (to the sourth), Palall (a creek), and Baltana (running water).

Hello List, I have scoured the death indexes at my State Library here in Tassie and have found no sign of three of my family members. I am assuming that they therefore died after 1934. I do not have access to any death indexes after 1934 although I know further indexes have been released. Could someone please lookup the following three people for me? They are pretty uncommon names! 1. Margaret Annie McCRONE born 1884, daughter of Alexander McCrone and Isabella Davidson (also could not find a marriage for her up until 1929) 2. Isabella KEHL, m/s Davidson, formerly McCrone, born abt 1861 in England. 3. Samuel Finch KEHL, husband of the above, nothing further known about him. I would be greatful for any help anyone can provide in finding my lost three! Thanks Michelle in Tassie (hopefully snow on the mountain tonight!)
