I am seeking descendants of (or/and information about) my maternal grandfather's family. Arthur COOK came from Minster Lovell, Oxfordshire to Sydney in the late 1800s. Then I discovered by chance last year that his brother Albert Edmund COOK came to Brisbane, marrying there in 1903 to Lydia YOUNG, and dying in 1925. I think they only had one son, same name as his father, who possibly did not marry himself. Albert (snr) was a french polisher & lived in the Sherwood area. I have now discovered, via one of the immigration websites, that Arthur & Albert's father (Edmund) & other siblings (Alice & James) probably came to Brisbane too (see below) - and possibly Arthur himself (on a separate voyage). The mother died in 1878 back in England, and we could never find what happened to the rest of the family after the 1881 census, till this. We have plenty of details of the family back in Oxfordshire, and - of course - of my own grandfather's life here in Sydney. This is what I have found: Family Name / Given Name / Age / Ship / Date / Location/ Page/ M'f no. COOK, Albert, 15, Duke of Westminster, 21 Aug 1883 IMM/118 218 M1699 COOK, Alice, 17, Duke of Westminster, 21 Aug 1883 IMM/118 218 M1699 COOK, Edward, 44, Duke of Westminster, 21 Aug 1883 IMM/118 218 M1699 COOK, James, 9, Duke of Westminster, 21 Aug 1883 IMM/118 218 M1699 Edmund has been misspelled as Edward (not surprising). His age is only out by a year or two. He was a baker in England. Albert, Alice & James's ages are correct. So it seems to be the correct family - too many coincidences! There is one other COOK on that voyage, but an unknown name to me - Charles COOK, age 21. Then there is Arthur - COOK Arthur 19 Silver Eagle 7 Jun 1882 IMM/116 785 M1698 This could be Arthur, if he came out separately (a year before the others, and on a different ship). He could have lived in Brisbane for a while, and then moved to Sydney. He married Minnie Elizabeth SATTLER in Sydney in 1909. I will be checking the above microfilms (& BDM indexes, and electoral rolls) the next opportunity I get, at State Library, Sydney, but if anyone has a link to any of these people, I would be VERY happy to hear from them!! Thank you Judy Dickinson Sydney
Dear List, I have been a passive member for some time and have picked up many ideas. However today I have 2 specific request. * My family, the Coopers, arrived on board the Jumna to Brisbane on Sept 18 1887. I am interested in learning about what the migrants had to do before finding out about their land grants. Did they have to be checked for diseases, was there designated places they had to stay on the first night, were they provided with assistance to reach their land allocation. My family I know went to Burpengary, but it intrigues me as to how they could do so with 7 children and belongings etc Did the newspapers of the day report ship arrivals? * Secondly another family, the Burys, arrived on 13 October 1881also arrived on board the Jumna. At this stage there was no connection between them. John and Mary Anne aBury arrived wirh daughters Mary Ann and Jean. A third daughter Mabel Agnes was born later in 1890. John was listed as a gardener and they lived at Fernberg Road ,Rosalie * On August 6th 1896 Mry Ann Bury (widow) married Alfred John Cooper. We are unable to find any death records for John Bury. Is anybody able to assist or lead me in a direction. The Brisbane City Council Grave Location Search http://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/BCC:STANDARD::pp=PC_897,pc=PC_899 reveals that he is buried with Henry W Roberts who was buried on 4 Oct 1920. They are buried in Portion 9A grave 538. If you use the WWW site yourself, you will also see a map showing the approximate location or a detailed map (click the radio buttons). Just FYI, South Brisbane cemetery is commonly known as Dutton Park cemetery. Kerry

Hello again Listers! Many thanks to Bob Dunbar and June Pickering for their help with the Draper family name. Below is what I have on the Drapers after they left England. William Draper was born in 1818 in London, England. He emigrated on 1 Nov 1862 from London, England to Brisbane, Australia on the Wanata with his wife and children. He died on 18 Jan 1881 in Australia. Father Bourne Hall Draper and Mother: Naomi Smith William Draper and Augusta Susan (Charlotte) Scott were married in Dec 1840 in Southampton, England. Children: Bourne Hall Draper born in 1841 in England. He died on 29 Nov 1913 in Queensland, Australia. Mary Jane Draper born in Jun 1843 Basingstoke, England. Married Robert HARDGRAVE Naomi Draper born in Dec 1845 Basingstoke. Married John Henry REYNOLDS Susan Draper born in 1847 Basingstoke. Married Thomas Peddington LUCAS Augusta Draper born in 1851, England. Married George White BARRYMORE William Draper (born on 12 May 1856). The marriages above all took place in Australia. The trail goes cold except for William Draper b. 1856. (This is my husband's direct line) Look forward to hearing from anyone who can add to this family. Many thanks. Alma Draper from Hot and Humid Cobourg, Ontario
Hi Listers I am looking for information on BOURNE HALL DRAPER who was born in 1841 in England. He is listed in the Old Age Pension Queensland listings of 1908-1909. Other than that I only have the information of when he left England with his parents and siblings in 1862. If anyone is connected to B.H. Draper I would be very happy to hear from them or from someone who could suggest where I can find more information on him. Thanks in advance. Alma Draper Cobourg, Ontario

Hi to the list. Reposting my name interest again. My gt grandfather, John Morris, states on his documentation that he was born Brisbane and his parent lived in Brisbane. His birth year was abt 1860 (writing without referring to files). I have found no record of his birth , nor a marriage for his parents, nor any other children born to a George Morris and Mary (Ann) Paterson. I have found no death for a Mary or Maryann Morris who might be the right age. John married in Warwick to a Mary Sussanah Sales or Sussanah Mary Sales, depending on what documents I look at. Does anyone have any of this names or any ideas as to what I could possibly do next? Glenda
Hello Listers I am searching for a marriage of Georgina McSKIMMING and Oliver Charles WHITELAW, I think they were married at COOLANGATTA about 1927-1931. Could SKS in the area look at the marriage records please. Thank you in advance. Jenette Bendigo Victoria
G'day Cobbers, Have some information on my McLEAN ancestry on my homepage: http://member.melbpc.org.au/~kennethb/ McLEAN - Garmouth, Moray, SCT>Qld, AUS Below is part of an email from a third cousin of mine, recently "discovered", which relates to the GRANT surname: "Yes this Bella (McLEAN) is the one we are interested in. She is the daughter of Charles McLean and Elspet Dean hence my mother's aunt. She married David Grant and they had one daughter also called Bella. It was she who went to Australia about 1949ish but she was married by then and as yet I have not found her married name. A couple of years later her parents Bella and David followed her out and remained there where they presumably died. I have no idea where they settled but I believe most emigrants then went to Melbourne and Sydney. Bella Grant may still be alive and would be about 84 yrs old now. No 34 Royston Mains Crescent Edinburgh, where Elspet Dean died was the home of Charles McLean and Marjory Wilson {my mothers parents} and Elspet Dean lived with them for the last 3 years of her life. Previously to this she lived at 10 Caledonian Crescent Edinburgh. Royston Mains Crescent was also where my parents lived when I was born so was my first home." Is anybody able to assist me with the surname of Bella GRANT's husband. I am trying to trace this family in Australia but need Bella's married name. Look forward to hearing from any McLEAN relatives. Hi Jenette, Here is the marriage: WHITELAW Olly Charles married MCSKIMMING Georgina Irving 23/2/1928 ref: 28/B002980 Unfortunately the indexes don't give where in Queensland they married - however the B in the reference means that they married within the Brisbane area. Therefore they definitely didn't marry in Coolangatta.
