We've been a bit quiet lately, because we've been busy replacing our old WWW server with a new one with a really big disk so we can fit on a lot more cemetery photos. Hopefully, you should not notice anything different; let us know if anything seems to be broken. We've also added some Google Earth links for many of our cemeteries. If you have Google Earth installed on your PC, you can click on the link and then "fly" in Google Earth to a satellite view of the cemetery (not sure if this is genuinely useful, but it is certainly a lot of fun!). For more info, see: http://www.chapelhill.homeip.net/FamilyHistory/Photos/PhotoCollectionExplanations.html#GoogleEarth Back to the cemeteries. New to our collection of photos-and-names for small cemeteries around Brisbane: * Bryden Catholic Cemetery, Esk Shire (formerly known as Deep Creek) * Caboonbah Church Cemetery, Esk Shire * Haigslea Lawn Cemetery, Ipswich (formerly known as "Walloon Scrub cemetery", "Kircheim Cemetery", "Kirchheiner Cemetery" and "Walloon Cemetery") * Kangaroo Point, St Mary's Anglican, Brisbane (in the "incomplete" section as we know we don't have photos of the plaques in the church) * Plainland Lutheran, Laidley Shire You can find our photos of cemeteries, columbarium walls and other memorial plaques at: www.ChapelHill.homeip.net/FamilyHistory/Photos/ You can find our war memorial photos at: www.ChapelHill.homeip.net/FamilyHistory/Other/WarMemorials/ Please send in suggestions for small cemeteries or columbarium walls or any other places with memorials in the Brisbane area that we can include in our site. Dear Robbie, You may be able to get some information on a softdrink factory in Sandgate from the Sandgate Historical Society. Below is an excerpt from their webpage. Also below is an entry from the Brisbane City Council library online catalogue for a photo of Tristram's softdrink factory at West End from 1949. Also, the first item below is the message from Ken Edwards from June 2004, which I think may be the message that Margaret is referring to. Best of luck with your research Robbie. Perhaps you could post a photo of the bottle of the words and symbol from the bottle to the list. Happy searching! Kind regards, Donna in Singapore. Hello All, Wonder if I could request a lookup for this family. Henry NOLAN probably born about 1850's & his wife Margaret Beatrice Nolan (Nee KERR). I have found through WW1 army records that they had at least 2 sons in Queensland before coming to WA. These are William Francis NOLAN about 1889 & Garrett Patrick NOLAN about 1892. Wonder if you could look for these births & any others & also look for a possible marriage in Queensland for Henry NOLAN & Margaret KERR. Hello, another somewhat off-topic post: For Brisbane City Library members, did you know you could access (among many other things) Ancestry.com in a library, and The Times digital archive 1795-1965 from home? Go to: http://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/uhtbin/webcat Then select "Online Reference Library", then "Genealogy". These may or may not apply to other QLD libraries depending on their arrangements with BCC. Happy hunting, Steve in Toohey Forest 4111 boy is it a hot day today!
Sorry this is not strictly Brisbane, but for any Ancestry UK subscribers, the 1851 census has just come online. It's not on the main page yet, but can be found at http://content.ancestry.co.uk/Browse/list.aspx?dbid=8860&path= So much for my weekend plans! Cheers, Steve
Some time ago SKS sent me the date of death for Stanton Gilmore in St Lucia, Brisbane in 1984. Since then I've managed to obtain the notice in the paper which indicates his wife had died before him. I would now like to find that death notice or obit if possible. Her name was Marjory Gilmore. Shirley in East Gippsland -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. Dear all, For those living in or around the City of Redcliffe (just north of Brisbane) area, you may like to know the following. I know a lot of public libraries have records but the ones nearest me don't. My cousin suggested I might like to try the Redcliffe Library [ph: (07) 3283 0311] on Oxley Avenue and I found that it has quite a few genealogical records. The ones I can remember are the usual Australian states ones plus a fair few British extras including records from Devon, Wiltshire and a pile of other counties I currently have no connection to. There are also some other country records. It looks like a fairly decent collection to me; I know I'd like to own some of it. Ring them if you want details. But. the real reason for this missive is that the LDS people who have their church further down Oxley Ave are currently (until Jan or Feb 2006) being refurbished, so some of their records are being housed at the Redcliffe Library. Unfortunately, the LDS ladies are there on Tuesday and Friday mornings, so if like myself you work you will have to wait until next year when the church is refurbished and Saturdays are available for research too. However, as the LDS do not advertise I thought there might be many more people (like me) who had no idea an LDS church at Redcliffe even existed. I've been traipsing up to Burpengary. Also whilst, there I picked up a pamphlet from the Redcliffe & District History Group, which is seeking new members. They also seem to have a lot of family history records. They meet at Clontarf Beach. I'm sure if you ring Redcliffe Library they can give you phone numbers and more details, or e-mail me. Kathryn Using Panda antivirus
