    3. thanks to Margaret for her reply and to others who have provided information about naturalization/voting privileges etc. your replies have been very helpful..one more question-! By being "compulsory" to be on an electoral list, is this really the very best way then to find if someone was living in OZ for any particular year or range of years? and does NAA or each State Archives have electoral rolls for all areas available for public viewing.or are there restrictions? i am trying to be very methodical and thorough here...so, can I search EVERY STATE for relevant years? is this possible? eg, EVERY STATE for years 1964-1975? for each of 4 individuals?...I know where "my family in question" was in 1964 but then they become "lost". looking forward to your tips. liz of BC Canada At 9:00 AM +1000 2/23/06, Margaret Otto wrote: >So the answer to your question is that > >- yes they were probably on the Electoral lists because I think back >then it was compulsory as it is today, and > >- no ...probably not naturalised. > >Have you tried the Government website for the National Archives. >You could do a search there perhaps.

    3. Haven't posted anything for a while so here goes:- My RUSSELL family came to Qld in 1883 from Warwickshire England. In 1881 they appeared on the census living in Aston, Warwick. Found them in 1883 in shipping arrivals in Cooktown on the " Nowshera". Family consisted of Thomas, wife Elizabeth and daughter Mary. Elizabeth died in July 1886 in Spring Hill Brisbane. I believe that Thomas may have died in 1889. This leaves a 12 year old daughter Mary an orphan in a strange country. Could anyone tell me what is likely to have happened to her? Would it be orphanage or domestic work? Would ther be an online databases for Brisbane orphanages of that time? I do have a marriage for Mary in 1900 in Bundaberg. She became my grandmother. regards Evelyn

    3. Does anyone know when Queensland will release more death Indexes? Compared to NSW [1975] probates [1982] and Victoria[1985] probates [1992] Queensland [1964] needs more recent death indexes released. Are electoral rolls the only source of information publicly available form 1970 on wards ? Karen

If he was cremated and living on that side of Brisbane, I would suspect that it would most likely be at Mt Thompson Crematorium. They now appear to have an on-line presence at: http://www.mtthompsoncrem.com.au/ You could try asking them. Kerry

No, at that time, if the person was a British subject, then they could vote in Australia. They did not need to take out Australian citizenship and therefore generally didn't do so. It is predominantly non-British subjects who you will find in the naturalisation records. > If one came to Brisbane in 1948 having applied for emigration etc, and > then might have returned to Britain, is there some way to find > out?>..reverse emigration?... If so, the records would probably be in the UK rather than Australia. Kerry

    3. Hi Liz If he was cremated at any of the private crematoriums he will not be listed on the Brisbane City Council website. A lot of people were cremated at these crematoriums in the later years. If you can give any further addresses it would be good. I will be visiting the Queensland State Archives early next week so could hopefully look up some electoral rolls to see if I can find a cut-off date for him. 3. Hi If they arrived before the 26th January 1949 they automatically became an Australian citizen on that date. No you did not have to be naturalized (if you were born in the UK) to be on the Electoral roll. My Dad arrived as a 9 year old in June 1949 ans joined the Australian Army and was a Justice of the Peace and was on the Electoral roll. It was only in the 1980s when he applied for an Australian passport that he found he wasn't an Australian citizen as he had always though the was one. 2. Chris Rendle
    3. Dear June, Yes it is. The information is very much appreciated. We note that Mary Catherine died six years to the day after her husband's death and, of course, it's the anniversary of both their deaths today - in this hemisphere, at least! The life Arthur led appears to have been an extremely varied one. Early education in the Blue Coat Charity School round the corner from where he lived in one of the poorer quarters of Oxford, England, an apprenticeship as a cook at Christ Church College there - which he did not complete - a seemingly lone trip on the Indus to Moreton Bay in 1873 as a 19 year old, possibly leasing government land in Queensland to mine for gold, running a hotel and living in one of the better parts of Brisbane, trips to USA, including one where his final destination was London, and, we hope, a happy retirement back in Australia. We'd like to know more about Mary, so back to the drawing board with her! 1. Re: Arthur and Mary Catherine EARL
    2. Chris Rendle
    3. A very sincere thank you to June, David, Barb and Werona (once again!) for so many new leads to follow up with the EARL family. Considering that the vast majority of Rosie's relatives lived in or close to Oxford, England (and still do), this branch of research is refreshing for us both. David, we'll look at Mount Thompson cremations; Barb, you make a house in Yabba Street sound like the ultimate Brisbane des res! Werona, we were hoping that the Australian Hotel might still be there, but there's been just a little bit of redevelopment in the Queen Street area, according to some pics we've seen! June, we believe Arthur died before Mary, but it might have been in USA or the land of his birth, England. But we would appreciate it if you could check any Queensland deaths for Arthur EARL prior to Mary's death. We're confident that Arthur didn't have a middle name and that he was alive in 1912 en route for London via San Francisco. Once again, we appreciate your time and expertise. Regards, Rosie and Chris Plymouth UK

    3. dear listers, I have received an emigration file and this person was willing to nominate our ancestor for emigration. REV B V BORROUGHS in 1948 I tried Freebmd and found an Benjamin Victor Borroughs born 1898 at West Riding, Yorkshire...he was listed as "friend" on Thomas's file. the birth year would "fit'. His address was "the rectory, Kilcoy, Queensland" I gather our ancestors actually stayed with him for some time as he was willing to accomodate them Does anyone have any info about this clergyperson? How long was required to 'house' someone after emigration? was there a requirement or commitment? Where could I look for historical info about CE clergy in Queensland? but of course, rather more recent...1948. Thomas Hope and his daughter Margaret Maureen went from England to Brisbane, 1948 and another family also, Doris Muriel "Hope' and son Charles Marcus R Gates. looking forward to your wisdom! thanks Liz of BC Canada
