Hello Kay That would be wonderful if you could. I am trying to gather information for Teddy's 93 year old sister, Nora Collins. She is the last of that generation. Trying to locate records for a Timothy (Teddy) Collins who was born about 1905 in Skibbereen, Ireland. His parents were James J Collins and Julia A Sullivan who were also born in Skibbereen but settled in New Hampshire along with the rest of their children. It is said that Teddy went to Australia, never married and died there about 1972. Recently, I have since learned that Teddy actually went to Brisbane and worked for the Sisters of Mercy, buried in their cemetery. With this new information could some one do a look up and/or provide a mailing address for the Sisters of Mercy. Many thanks in advance. --------------------------------- How low will we go? Hello from Melbourne. My G Aunt, Mary Christine (Chrissy) CUNNING, married John WHITWELL in Calliope on 19 Dec 1923. Is anyone researching this line? I have no information at all as to where the WHITWELL family originated. Cheers, Bob Cunning
Hi Margery My 3Xgreat uncle and aunt John and Eleanor MORRIS and six of their children, ranging in age from 26-year-old Elizabeth down to 5-year-old Alfred; together with John's brother William and his wife Ann sailed on the Conway, arriving in Moreton Bay on 27th November 1862. An extract of the Queensland State Archive location reference IMM/112 microfilm number M1696 records the Conways passenger list as follows: Page 145 The family of John and Eleanor MORRIS: Alfred age 4 Edith age 10 Elizabeth age 25 Ellen age 45 Ellen age 21 Isabella age 12 John age 48 John age 19 The family of William and Ann MORRIS: Alfred age 12 Ann age 39 Eliza age 6 Henry age 15 William age 40 William age 13 Ann age 19 (?) For some reason John and Eleanor had rounded their ages down to less than 50. Does anyone know if this was required to qualify for financial assistance with their passage or something? Although I am able to describe what happened to the MORRIS families on arrival in Queensland, I am unable to help with details of the voyage and those illustrious other passengers. Please contact me if I can be of help with your interesting line of research Cheers Chris -----Original Message----- From: Margery W Phair [mailto:m.phair@bigpond.com] Sent: 11 March 2006 07:07 To: AUS-QLD-BRISBANE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [AQ-BRISBANE] The CONWAY to Qld. 1862 Hello Listmembers In 1862, 141 single women of "superior class" arrived in Queensland aboard the Conway. Hi Listers ,I know this is a bit off topic ,but I would just like to let others know that "Colin Judd" who was a member of the QFHS at Gaythorne ,passed away Wednesday pm , he was a great researcher with Brisbane streets etc, he will be remembered by me , Terry Murphy
Firstly, I must thank publically all the list members who have replied to my previous messages regarding Elizabeth STEPHENS and John PHAIR. Would there be a kind list member who could do a look-up for me at the Queensland State Archives? Please reply off-list and I will supply details. Thanks again, Margery (Gloucester, NSW)
> dear listers: I was able to find out that a THOMAS HOPE died "in 1983" and > was cremated. I unfortunately do not know where or the date, but he was > cremated in a Brisbane crematorium that is thought to serve East Brisbane > area. Most likely Mount Thompson Crematorium. In that time period, the only other crematorium I know of is at Albany Creek which is in the far northern suburbs. Mt Thompson is a lot closer to East Brisbane. > Is a lookup for OBIT possible? could I do it from Canada online? To the best of my knowledge, there is no index whatsoever for that period for death/funerals notices or obits in Brisbane (online or offline). Therefore, the only way to find these items is to read through the microfilmed newspapers around the date in question. This means you need to have a date, not just a year (unless you have a lot of spare time for reading microfilmed newspapers!). I think your best course of action is to write to the Mt Thompson crematorium to see if they can supply you with more details (including a more precise date of date). If you can get a date of death/cremation, finding death/funeral notices becomes relatively easy. Note that there are very few obituaries published in the Brisbane newspapers, so unless we are dealing with a well-known public figure, the chances of finding an obituary are very slim. Kerry
