    1. Hotel keepers in Brisbane
    2. Brian & Mari Walker
    3. I am new to this list and am searching for information on a Licensed Victualler who may or may not have been the owner or otherwise of a hotel in Norfolk Road, South Brisbane in August 1881. The person's name was Andrew THREDGOLD and I do know that he was the licensee of a hotel in Cooktown prior to this date. Andrew died at the Norfolk Road address in August 1881 and I am trying to ascertain whether or not this was a private residence or a hotel. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Mari in Adelaide -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Version: 7.1.394 / Virus Database: 268.9.0/366 - Release Date: 15/06/2006

    3. Hi The Queensland State Archives has some of their immigration indexes on line at: http://www.archives.qld.gov.au/research/index/immigration.asp There is a Wm Griffiths arriving 13 July 1869 aboard the Young Australia who possibly may be your gentleman. Unfortunately his age was not given in the index. Were his parents living there at the time of his marriage? If so there is no Margaret Williams listed in this index as arriving before 1871. However these indexes are not complete and further indexes at the Queensland State Archives need to be checked. Also the Land Orders index should be checked as sometimes the passenger list has not survived and you are able to find them by the Land orders index (assuming they came to Queensland first and not to another State in which case you also need to look at those State records). The family coming from Canada are going to be more of a problem as there was no official emigration program from Canada. It is of course possible they went back to England befroe coming to Australia in which case they may have come on an English emigration scheme. If they paid their own way they are unassisted passengers and the Government did not really keep a lot of information on them. There is a Victorian index to unassisted immigrants. This is on the Victorian State Archives site. Do you have the death certificates for these people as one of the questions asked was "How long in the colony?" Of course that is only useful if the informant actually knew the answer. 3. Thanks for the info and advice Helen,I shall have a look at the indexes. I do not have their death certificates but I do know that William and Ellen Griffith and two of their three children ( a third child died in Australia ),were back living in Wales by 1881 as their first son was born then . According to their marriage certificate both William,s and Ellens parents were at Copperfields,Queensland, which did surprise me.It is possible that Williams parents went to Australia first as I have been unable to find them on the 1861 census and William and his and sisters were living withe their grandparents. Thanks again,I shall take a look at the Queensland archives site,Kath Helen Smith <helen@st.net.au> wrote: Hi The Queensland State Archives has some of their immigration indexes on line at: http://www.archives.qld.gov.au/research/index/immigration.asp There is a Wm Griffiths arriving 13 July 1869 aboard the Young Australia who possibly may be your gentleman.
