    3. Hi folks, I think I misled everyone by calling "Gympie" a road instead of a street?...so below it may be clarified that there was a Gympie street in Northgate..if anyone remembers a house named "Penang" on this street, i would love to hear from you!...thanks liz of BC Canada >Hi > >This question has nagged at me since I first saw it. 3. Hi This question has nagged at me since I first saw it. Have just looked at map and note that there is a "Gympie Street" at Northgate which goes off Sandgate Road near the Virginia Primary School. Knew I had seen the name "Penang" somewhere - now I have to remember how and why! I don't live in Brisbane now so it is impossible for me to take a trip into the area to verify my "remembers brain cells"! I did have a friend who lived in this area and perhaps it was on the occasions I drove her home that I passed a house with this name. Then that was about 40 years ago....... 3. Dear Liz, The Brisbane City Council has an online library catalogue that has some photos http://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/BCC:STANDARD:1256002783:pc=PC_1239 A photo of Gympie Road from the 1950's is at http://elibcat.library.brisbane.qld.gov.au/uhtbin/hyperion-image/BCC-B54-260 though it is not Northgate, you should get a general idea of how the area looked at that time. 1. the house named "Penang' on Gympie...
    2. Harvie and Liz Barker
    3. thanks to all the folks who have supplied information about GYMPIE ROAD at Brisbane...the person who remembered living there in 1950, was only there for less than 2 years...returning home to Britain in October 1950...and he was about 15 yrs old at the time..so he could;ve gotten the suburb location mixed up? these folks emigrated in 1948 and lived temporary quarters then boarded then went to Kilcoy briefly, then settled into "Penang". BUT I am wondering if it was typical for each house to be named, such as "PENANG" without a house number? and do you think this house can be located? again, the man, now about 75 yrs old, may not have known or remembered the street address of the temporary residence of this family. thanks again for your help, liz of BC Canada

    3. Dear Liz, You are quite right, it is indeed a major road. In fact it is one of the major roads in Brisbane (especially) on the northern side of the river. It eventually links to the Bruce Highway which is the main road north on the Queensland Coast. If you wish to see images, I suggest you try this site: http://www.pictureqld.slq.qld.gov.au/ It is the Qld State Library pictures site. Unfortunately it is down today so I could no check for you but if you type in Gympie Road you should get a lot of photographs. It can take a few minutes to load. Don't try to pinpoint the year as Gympie Rd will have looked the same for a number of years. Also the description for each photograph will indicate the time-frame. If Gympie Road seems fruitless, try Gympie Rd but do not try Gympie as that is another town. Try Northgate and Penang too, you never know your luck.
