However, I found this possibility: TAYLOR Samuel 19/5/1917 F: John James M: Teresa Alice FENNEY (1917/005078) TAYLOR George Thomas 30/10/1915 F: John James M: Teresa Alice FINNEY (1915/013331) There were no other combinations of Joe (Joseph)/Samuel/George with the same parents 1915-1919. John James & Teresa married in 1914 - there were no children born prior to marriage - so if this is your couple Joseph was born after 1919. So we won't find Dorothy's birth or any later siblings. There are birth indexes up to 1919, but 1915-1919 are only on microfiche. Up to 1914, they are CD-ROM. Given the information you have, there are two lines of attack. 1. Go through the indexes for any births of George, Samuel and Joseph/Joe Taylor -- there will be lots as Taylor is a comon name. The aim is to try and find parents who had children with 1 of these names. 2. Go through the indexes for any births on the same date -- looking for twins. Again, the aim is to find a possible set of parents. If you should happen to find a set of parents that turn up for more than 1 of the children's names or as the parents of twins, make them a high priority! Once you have the list of possible parents, look in the death indexes for the death of the mother in around 1924. Obviously focus on the high priority possibilities first. That will eliminate most of the possibilities and then you can do more research on any sets of parents that remain, e.g. search for the father's remarriage, funeral notices for the mother or a headstone for the mother. But if Dorothy's siblings are born after 1920, you aren't going to find her parents by this method. But with the information you currently say you have, I think it's your best line of attack. If there was more information, there might be more efficient approaches. Of course, if you have an entitlement to get Dorothy's birth certificate, that would be the simplest solution. Kerry

Hi list, I appreciate for those with no connections it will not be all that relevant but for those with British ancestry, the Yesterdays site contains thousands of names of folks many of whom were strays or strangers, away from their recognised abode or expected parish. The Settlement Certificates and particularly the Settlement Examinations give a good account of what can be found in Record Offices and if you have any such overseas connections with the UK they are well worth the effort in trying to see if such a document(s) survives for your ancestors, particularly if they have "moved". It may be they are even within this list, but if not, it still gives a good idea of what can be found in their respective parishes and County Record Offices. Bastardy records may name the father, Apprenticeships let you know who the young lads and lasses went to serve, some as young as seven years. There may be instances of Apprentices running away because of cruelty on behalf of the Master. Removal documents record those folks who fell on hard times and were removed back to their last legal Settlement.
