    1. Re: [AUS-QLD-BRISBANE] People's Voice website
    2. Kerry Raymond
    3. >> I found an interesting website this evening - one I've never heard of >> before and that may be of interest to some of us genies. >> It's called "People's Voice", subtitled "Australian Community History >> Online". It says "Discover our communities' stories" - self explanatory. >> The address is:- >> >> http://peoplesvoice.gov.au/menuf.html - go to the About page for more >> details. Having previously said that the site looks somewhat dormant, I have discovered that a Brisbane-specific site called Brisbane Memories has just been launched by Brisbane City Council & Griffith University: http://eresearch.griffith.edu.au/brisbanememories/index.php/Main_Page It is a Wiki (meaning all registered users can add and edit content, anyone can view it) using the same software as the very successful Wikipedia: http://www.wikipedia.org/ Since it's free to become a registered user and contribute content, this has the potential to be a sustainable approach to this kind of community-based history. But it's just starting out and there isn't much content yet, so its success will depend on people's willingness to contribute. They are soliciting information on people, places, events, organisations, infrastructure "or indeed any aspect of Brisbane's fascinating past" (to quote from their site). The site was "launched" the site today at the Qld Local & Family History Fair out at the Mt Gravatt Showgrounds. So, if you were there, you might have seen their display and taken their brochure. Anyhow, since it is sounded like a Good Idea, I thought I'd give it a go and started by adding a page on my great-grandfather Alfred John Raymond, briefly mayor of Brisbane in 1912. Take a look: http://eresearch.griffith.edu.au/brisbanememories/index.php/Alfred_John_Raymond I also added a few "stubs" (Wiki jargon for a very basic entry on something intended to stimulate others to write something more fullsome) on a few places around Brisbane that I mention in my Alfred John Raymond page. One thing the site does not have yet is a good set of Help pages, but as it is using the same software as Wikipedia, you can use its help pages at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Contents Note that I have some experience with doing Wiki page layout from Wikipedia so I did a few slightly fancy things (subheading and photos). But with most Wiki pages, you just go into edit mode and type in text as you do in email and you will get some reasonably good looking result for your efforts. Wiki is designed to be very simple for the new user, but with the scope to be a bit more sophisticated if you want to take the trouble to learn. If you want some help to get started, give me a yell. 3. I asked a friend who is a local historian and whose name appears on the site. Apparently there are plans to revamp the site but she doesn't know about the timeframe. I'll let you know if I hear more. It appears to be a Centenary of Federation project (i.e. 2000). Most of the content seems to have appeared around 2001. The latest News item mentions a book launch on Wed 19 March. The last time 19 March was a Wednesday was in 2003. Lots of pages (now in 2006) are still under development, suggesting not much has happened since. It's clearly a professionally developed site, which suggests to me that its development probably stopped when the funding finished. It looks like someone had a good idea, but didn't really think through how to develop it in a scalable sustainable way. So, I'd contact them and check if they are still working on the site before sitting down and preparing material for them. 3. Hi Kerry Thanks for that info. I have to admit I haven't had much of a look at it as yet - I found it while doing a Google search for things about the Queanbeyan Museum (yes, I have plenty of that now!). I think I will take your advice and contact them, even though I was not necessarily going to add anything of my own to the site (that would probably depend on that great commodity, time!).
