Stewart SMITH, at Rugby(UK) is researching the following family: [1] Edwin SMITH, born Kidderminster, Worcestershire, GB, on 20 Dec 1871. He was my g-uncle. He emigrated to Queensland in about 1886 and became a coal miner. He belonged to the Christadelphian faith. [2] Ann Barnes RUSSELL, born about 1879 in Haddington, Scotland. She emigrated to Australia in about 1880. She was the daughter of the Mine Manager at which Edwin worked, and married Edwin SMITH on 17 Feb 1898 at the Ipswich (Nr. Brisbane) Register Office. Edwin and Ann had three children. [3] Florence Isabella SMITH, born 09 Aug 1898. She was probably a spinster for all of her life. She was still alive in 1970-71. [4] Frederick Charles Rodway SMITH, born 03 Mar 1901. /I have no further information about him. /[5] Lillian Gertrude SMITH, born 19 Nov 1904. She may/may not have married James Eric O'CALLAGHAN at Brisbane on 14 Dec 1932. [1] Edwin SMITH was living at 07, Campbell Terrace, Alderley, Brisbane on 10 May 1953 when he died. He is buried in the Lutwyche Cemetery, Brisbane. [2] Ann Barnes SMITH (RUSSELL), was living in Edward Street, Booval, Nr. Brisbane, where she died on 15 April 1909. She is buried in the Ipswich Cemetery. If you have any interest in, or information about, this family, I would like to hear from you. I would particularly like to know if there are any living descendants. With best wishes, Stewart Rugby (UK)
Hello from Melbourne. My G Aunt, Mary Christine (Chrissy) CUNNING, married John WHITWELL in Calliope on 19 Dec 1923. Is anyone researching this line? I have no information at all as to where the WHITWELL family originated. Cheers, Bob Cunning

Qld State Library is to reopen Sat 25 Nov 2006 back at Southbank. Read all about it here: http://www.slq.qld.gov.au/about/mlp Now doubtless you are asking yourself ... but what's new for the family historian? Well, one of things you can do in the State Reference Library will be "trace your family history", so at least we haven't gone backwards! Meanwhile the Tim Fairfax Newspaper Reading Room will provide "seamless access to historic newspapers from today back to 1785". Now this might mean that they've digitised all their microfilmed newspapers (three cheers if that happens!), but I suspect what it means is that they have access to that digitised copy of the The Times that's been available online for some time now. I suspect all our Qld newspapers will be still on their microfilms. So I suspect that's a "much ado about nothing" and more about providing access to online newspapers and contemporary newspaper archives rather than historic ones. In terms of putting flesh on the family tree, John Oxley Library will now permit "open-browsing of selections from the collection - a first in the 72 year history of John Oxley Library". It's not clear how much of the collection will be browse-able, but obviously it's a step in the right direction. Also the "on-site repository also facilitates client access to collections" which I assume means that retrievals will now be faster since it doesn't involve a truck driving to another suburb. The Indigenous Knowledge Centre will have "interactive pods provide a portal for Indigenous personal reference for researching heritage, collections, language holdings, and useful resources". I hope indigneous people understand what that means, because I don't -- I thought a pod was a collection of dolphins and a portal was something in Stargate that whisked you to another world in another time. Whatever, it sounds like there may be some new resources for those tracing indigenous ancestors, albeit at some personal risk to your coordinates in the space/time continuum :-) Anyhow, go along after 25 Nov and see for youself. Kerry

Hello Terry, It looks like Kennedy survived the war so if it was me I would start looking at the old electoral rolls starting just after the war.
