    3. Dear Maureen I have no idea whether this is use or not but before the formation of Greater Brisbane, there was a Francis Street in Kangaroo Point. There is no mention of a Francis St. in Fortitude Valley. The one in Kangaroo Pt. is now called Anglesey Street. I guess it depends on where the suburb boundaries were in the 1880s. But I would have thought they were smaller not larger. Ref: Teague, David (1994) "Directory of Street Name Changes"; bought from Windsor & Districts Historical Society.(very handy booklet, usually) Regards, Kathryn From: aus-qld-brisbane-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-qld-brisbane-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Maureen Arthur Sent: Tuesday, 5 December 2006 3:28 PM To: AUS-QLD-BRISBANE@rootsweb.com Subject: [AUS-QLD-BRISBANE] Where was Frances street, The Valley, in 1888? Hello listers, I have looked through the 1880's Qld Post Office Directory for my ancestors, and found that one family lived for several years at Frances street, The Valley. I know that The Valley was another name for Fortitude Valley near Brisbane city. But where was Frances street? A check of current street directories seems to show that Frances street no longer exists. Can anyone suggest where I may find out where Frances street The Valley was in the late 1880's? 3. Hi Looking up the Ferderaion CD deaths: Bertha Beckett dau of William Beckett and Martha Hamer died 7 Nov 1891 1891/002934 MAR This is a marine death so she appears to have actually died on board the ship. Martha Beckett dau of Bartholomew Hamer and Lucy Barnford Died 7 Jan 1893 1893/001538 (this is the registration number) If you purchase the death certificates it will tell you where they are buried. On my marine death it gave me the longitude and latitude of burial. New lister Hello, Living in England makes it hard to fill in familyhistory, can any lister give me advice please? I have a Bertha BECKETT on the English census of 1891 taken on the 5th April, who travelled to Brisbane because od her health, alas she died in Brisbane between 1891 and 1895. Her sister had accompanied her,so that the surving sister would not have to travel home alone her parents Wiliam Beckett a Methodist Minister and his wife Martha went out to Brisbane.Tragically Martha Beckett died shortly after arriving there. Whilst in Brisbane William reacquainted himself with another Methodist Preacher, one Rev.W.O.Lilley. Does anyone know : - Are the BMD's for this period available online? Where are mother and daughter likely to be buried? If anyone has any suggestions I'd love to hear from you. Thanks,on a very pleasant Sunday morning . 3. Well, they might have been Methodists but it turns out that Bertha and Martha were buried in Grovely Anglican church cemetery. Today Grovely is in Brisbane, but it would probably have been outside of the boundaries of Brisbane back then. Here is the photo of the headstone: http://www.chapelhill.homeip.net/FamilyHistory/Photos/Grovely-Anglican-cemetery-Brisbane/index.php?image=141_4132.JPG So if Bertha died at sea as the death index suggests, she was brought to Brisbane for burial. I guess her sister might have been in something of a state, and not too particular about which cemetery, or maybe they had relatives or friends in that congregation or something like that. Then when the mother died, the family wanted them to be buried together. Kerry

It would appear Bertha died at sea. Her death is registered as a marine death: Beckett ,Bertha ,D ,William Beckett ,Martha Hamer ,1891-11-07 ,1891/ 002934 MAR Here is the death of Martha: Beckett ,Martha ,D ,Bartholomew Hamer ,Lucy Barnford ,1893-01-07 ,1893/ 001538 It is not registered in Brisbane (there would be a B in the registration number) and there appears to be no burial for them in Brisbane. But if Bertha died at sea, she may have been buried at sea. Kerry

When I next go to the library in the next couple of days, I could look up their deaths & give you their reference numbers & you could then order the certificates which will give you the place where they are buried. 3. Hello from Melbourne. Just reposting my message in hope. I attended the school from 1942 to 1946. I would like to hear from anyone else who was a pupil in those years. I am particularly interested in class photos for those years. I have tried the school, but they cannot help because a fire destroyed a lot of their records. The Centenary book was also of no use in this regard. I am also on the Schoolfriends list and a ''Letter to the Editor'' in the '' Queensland Times'' produced no results. Enquiries to the leading photographer in Ipswich were also fruitless as were enquiries to John Oxley library and the family history society . Cheers, Bob

    1. [AUS-QLD-BRISBANE] Ryerson Index - Indexers Wanted
    2. John Graham
    3. The Ryerson Index currently has vacancies for an indexer or indexers to cover two Queensland dailies: The Ipswich "Queensland Times" (20-30 notices per week, over 6 days) The Brisbane "Courier Mail" (approx 300 notices per week, over 6 days) Ideally, indexers would already receive the paper they volunteer to index, and could index from the printed version. It is possible to index from the web, but we have found difficulties with this in the past. If you don't want to take on a whole week (particularly the "Courier Mail"), we're happy to take you for one (or more) days each week. If you are interested, please contact me off-list for further details. John

    1. [AUS-QLD-BRISBANE] New headstone photos: Bergen Djuan, Douglas, Emu Creek (all Crows Nest Shie)
    2. Kerry Raymond
    3. We have photos of headstones from 3 Crows Nest Shire cemeteries for your viewing pleasure: * Bergen Djuan [might also be known as Haden?] * Douglas * Emu Creek Does anyone have any knowledge of the Douglas cemetery? It's just that we found a very small fenced area containing just a few visible graves and a few headstones. However, subsequently we found what appears to be a burial register online [see the link on the Douglas intro page], which (although full of duplicate entries) nonetheless suggests there are many more burials than could fit into that small area and would surely have resulted in more surviving headstones than what we found. This begs the question: is there another part to the cemetery that we didn't find? Or did the rest of the cemetery get destroyed somehow (e.g. a fire)? The surrounding area appeared to be a paddock with a lot of prickly pear but no headstones that I could see. So if anyone knows anything about this cemetery, please let us know. Also, we found the large Emu Creek cemetery (well, large in area, maybe not so large in terms of number of graves and headstones) on the New England Highway, but we have heard there may be a 2nd cemetery in Emu Creek, possibly near the Emu Creek Hall where there appears to be an old church (now used as a house). Does anyone have more information on this 2nd Emu Creek cemetery? For our cemetery photos, see here: www.ChapelHill.homeip.net/FamilyHistory/Photos/ Kerry Raymond & David Horton

    3. Roma, I think you would be better writing to the Mayor as I believe the State has handed over cemeteries responsibility to local councils and Beattie will only pass your letter on. If you get nothing suitable from BCC, then you can complain to the Premier and he would have to chivvy the local council up. Others may know more about how these things work? Robert Gold Coast ----- Original Message ----- From: Chris & Maree Walker To: AUS-QLD-BRISBANE-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Tuesday, November 07, 2006 11:49 AM Subject: [AUS-QLD-BRISBANE] friends of south brisbane cemetery Hi Listers, I received these 3 letters from Roma Waldron. Maree in Ipswich ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I will keep this brief 3 friends & I have formed the Friends of South Brisbane Cemetery. We are absolutely disgusted and appalled with the condition of the cemetery. We want it cleaned up I have been in contact with the people in charge of cemeteries but are not satisfied with their response. can you offer us any advice and what is your opinion Regards Roma Waldron email; rwal0782@bigpond.net.au ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks for your reply I went on line and typed in cemeteries and visited a lot of sites then came across the one where you contributed some listings for the cemetery. So I thought good place to start. Many of the emails bounced back but so far 4 of you are still around. I have attached a couple of photos I took last Wednesday I have no-one buried there but am appalled at the state of this cemetery I will definately contact the local member and also Dutton park. This cemetery must be cleaned up. Cheers Roma ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi All I have just sent this to our secretary for her perusal and to make any additions as she sees fit. a couple of photos will be added as soon as Tracey gets back to me. Any body else who would like to make any additions please feel free cheers Roma Dear Premier, I am the President of The Friends of South Brisbane Cemetery at Dutton Park. I would like to inform you re the disgusting, deplorable and heartbreaking state of the Cemetery. In this cemetery are the remains of many ex service men, the founder of the cemetery Mr Dutton, many Polticians, business people and everyday ordinary people who contributed in either a small way or a large way. These people deserve to have their final resting place kept in a decent condition. I am not talking about vandals but about the state in which the graves are kept in this cemetery. I will admit the lawns are mowed but that is all. There are dead branches that have fallen from the trees onto headstones and graves and have been there for years. Many are being destroyed by tree roots . The Council claims that there are concrete paths so people can walk on to view their relatives graves. This is incorrect as in 90% of the concrete paths are missing, badly broken or have large trees growing in the centre of these so called concrete paths. It is very unsafe for people to walk there and one day someone will fall and cause themselves great injury. Many graves are buried under inches of leaves or tree roots this is just not good enough. Why have they not been removed and taken away, why are they left to lie there for years. Last Wednesday the Secretary & myself took 172 photos at the Annerley Road end. In the section we covered there were approximately 500 graves. We could have taken hundreds and hundreds more, but we were so upset at the absoulte disregard of these deceased people. Is there not in place a work for the dole scheme. If so why are these people not put to work in ALL council cemeteries on a permanent basis to make the cemeteries a place to be proud of. At the moment the Council & Government should hang their heads in shame. I would like to see something done ASAP before we take further action to let everyone know the state of the South Brisbane Cemetery by going to the media and newspapers. Who I am sure would be more than happy to do the story. Regards Roma Waldron President of The Friends of South Brisbane Cemetery.
