    1. Re: [AUS-QLD-BRISBANE] Ferrymen in Brisbane
    2. Joan
    3. Hello listers During a trip to Qld a few years ago I tried to find information about Ferrymen or Boatman working on the Brisbane River around Kangaroo Point area possibly, without success. My Gt. Grandfather Andrew Thompson's occupation was shown in 1877 and 1879 as a Boatman and Ferryman, previous years he had been a Fisherman and I was hoping someone may have information on boatmen or seamen at this time or be able to point me in the direction of records although I have been to the archives and not been able to find Andrew. Would anyone have any information on the above please. Kind regards Joan

    2. Hi The majority of these would have carried passengers and freight and I believe most were of English origin (therefore any could be the ship) Many Irish emigrated from Liverpool. Another option is to look at teh Newspapers for this time period as they usually show some information about the voyage. They also often show testamonials signed by the passengers about what a good ship it was etc. You might just get lucky. I did for my 1863 voyage. 2. Margery W Phair
    3. I am looking for the death of John William Joseph BURROWS (possibly known as HANDS) sometime in the 1950s'. I believe he lived around Brisbane. I am also looking for a possible marriage for him sometime around 1945. Any assistance greatly appreciated. With thanks, Margery

    3. Hi Werona, One thing worth mentioning - the staff at archives were great, and what a wonderful building and site! Enjoyed the experience so much, will return in a week or so when the death certs for Felix and Mary arrive. Take pullover next time, 6 hours there and 1 hour to thaw!. Also impressed with the excellent customer service extended by Qld BDM to ensure I obtain the correct items, such efficient, caring staff! Not always evident in Government departments. Delightful to encounter! 3. Hi Helen, Yes, the punt ferry was operating at the time. I imagine that a woman brave enough to leave her land and travel half-way around the world would not be trepid at the thought of taking small children on a punt across river to church. I would baulk, but probably not Mary! Perhaps the parish priest occasionally serviced the parish at South Brisbane, too. So much to learn! 3. Hi Werona, Nice of you to mail - I am quite new to all this, became immersed in family tree only a matter of weeks ago and still feeling my way! Everyone on site is so helpful, and it somehow helps me to see the queries in print rather than always in my head, if you know what I mean. Lack of proficiency with the PC doesn`t help either! BIG learning curve happening on Lamb Island!!! Can`t be certain, but the idea of them arriving unassisted seems remote - Felix was a labourer, with wife and 2 children. I have visited Archives once week before last, no mention in card index file, none in passenger lists, drew a blank re this. However, whilst there I compiled a list of shipping into Moreton Bay during the narrow time-frame required for which I could find no passenger lists - probably due to my inexpert searching, but if some or most of the vessels can be eliminated as unlikely to have carried Irish immigrants it would narrow the search more. Several of the names suggest mainland Europe to me. They are: 57 Mangerton arrival 7/8/61 61 Persia 03/12/61 62 Wansfell 1862 63 Theresa 1862 64 Jessie Munn 28/01/62 65 Saldanha 28/01/62 ----- Original Message ----- From: "Werona Armstrong" <werona@bacchus.com.au> To: <aus-qld-brisbane@rootsweb.com> Sent: 14 February, 2007 8:54 AM Subject: Re: [AUS-QLD-BRISBANE] Assisted passage > Hi Dee, > > I'm coming in late on the discussion, so please excuse me if I'm saying > things already said. > > Do you know for sure that they were assisted passengers? 3. Hi Steve, Thank so much for confirming the date as being 1848 - this does help as I am certain that they had to arrive assisted. I have checked the Immigration Records as you suggest, also the Land Orders at Archives 2 weeks ago. However I will go back soon and re-trace the ground previously covered. It was my first time there and not confident my search was comprehensive. Perhaps it will eventuate that we will never find the ship`s name and date of arrival, at least I am trying to give it my best shot! Not particularly proficient at PC, either - learn as I go. Such a journey - for them and I! Everyone has been so kind - I appreciate your help greatly. Have a great Valentine`s Day everyone! 3. Hi Helen, Now that is an excellent idea - They were RC, the only Catholic church in existence then, as far as I am aware, was the old St. Stephen`s church which is situated on the grounds beside St Stephen`s Cathedral in the city. I am unsure if the first wooden structure Victoria Bridge was built then or not until 1864 - it would be difficult to attend if not. Will enquire at the Cathedral, they may still carry records. Well Done! All other records checked, unfortunately. 2. Hi Dee Yes this is what makes it all so much fun. You did not mention if you had checked the land orders for them? Have you looked at the early Post Office Directories? On the death certificates does it give a time period for being in the colony? (probably not much help as you have such a narrow date range) Doing some sideways thinking here, what would have been the closest Catholic (were they Catholic?) church to where they lived in South Brisbane? It may be wotrh enquiring if the church has any admission records for new parishioners or maybe church school records. It would be worth checking the State school records (depending on the ages of the children) for when they started school. 3. Hi Dee, > I was hoping that some kind soul could assist me with the date of > the commencement of assisted immigration to Brisbane began, which > may assist with a date. There were government-assisted migrants arriving in Moreton Bay by 1848. Different schemes operated at different times; and there were also a few privately-run assisted schemes. If you haven't seen the QSA brief guide "Immigration Records", this is online at http://www.archives.qld.gov.au/research/briefguides.asp It says that the land orders I mentioned before, *may* include details of the ship and date of arrival. So this is a possible alternative if the actual arrival record can't be found. Regards Steve

    3. Hi Helen, A little complicated - but here are the facts as we know them: Felix Dolan and Mary Snow married in Derrygonnelly Co Fermanagh,Ireland, in 1854. Four children subsequently born in Ireland, two died there - the last, John, born in Dec 1860 died date unspecified soon after. The family immigrated to Brisbane. Child, Margaret, born Brisbane June 1862. (Which gives us the timeframe of immigration) At some point the family changed their name to Dolin from Dolan, due to a cousin Felix Dolan and his wife Mary (nee Doherty) also immigrating to Brisbane in 1865 from Derrygonnelly with their children. (This creates confusion with Qld BDM, and us too!) Both cousins and families settled around South Brisbane and continued to be closely connected for many years. The first couple mentioned, Felix/Mary Dolin , are my great-grandparents. Mary had a total of 16 children, 8 of whom subsequently died at birth or soon after. Mary died in 1877, Felix in 1910. We have their gravesites, pension records for Felix (10 shillings per week from 1908), and data on addresses etc. But - can not find record of arrival! Have searched NSW, Vic, SA to no avail. As the time scale is so narrow re births and deaths of children, they had to arrive at earliest March 1861 and latest June 1862 - the very months the records are least! Creative name spelling is not helpful either - ie Dolin/Dolan/Doolan/Dollin, all of which appear to have been used at some time or other. There is ample data re the second couple, cousin Felix and Mary Dolan`s arrival in 1865 on 'Maryborough'! I was hoping that some kind soul could assist me with the date of the commencement of assisted immigration to Brisbane began, which may assist with a date. Great fun and games endeavouring to sort out the various family in Ireland prior to 1830`s, as you can imagine! Any help or ideas greatly appreciated - Dee. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Helen Smith" <helen@st.net.au> To: <aus-qld-brisbane@rootsweb.com> Sent: 14 February, 2007 7:06 AM Subject: Re: [AUS-QLD-BRISBANE] Assisted passage > Hi > > Are you sure they came to Queensland first? 3. Hi Are you sure they came to Queensland first? And not to New South Wales? I assume you have them in England in 1861 and a birth in Brisbane in June 1862 as you have given this time period? Does this mean that you have not found them in the 1861 census? What were their names? Each state did its own immigration and there were a lot of different schemes. There is unfortunately also a problem in Queensland that not all the immigration records survived asa number of lists were lost in the 1893 flood. I assume that you have also checked their names in the land orders file? I have eveidence of immigration and what ship only by the land order files as this is one of the lists that was lost. I also assume you have checked the Z series at the archives. 3. Hi Dee, Some of the Qld immigrant records were destroyed during floods - I think in the 1890s? I know that some of the missing records were from early 1860's as some of my people's were lost. The archives can sometimes fill these gaps with passenger lists, but of course they don't give nearly as much info. Another possibility is to check land records for grants, which many were given on arrival as part of their package. Hope your people do turn up! Thanks, Dee BYSTER-GRAHAM Idyllic Moreton Bay Island.
