Hi I am interested in finding out more about FRANCIS VICTORIA MAY PARKER, I know that she married a man named MATTHEW ERNEST WALL. I do not have any other details about her and I am hoping that someone out there is also researching the name of PARKER. I would appreciate details such as birth, marriage and death if it should be the case. I know that they were originally in the Portsmouth area of the UK and I understand that they emigrated to Australia in the 1960's. Best wishes June

Fabulous Barb; that's just the sort of information I was looking for. I did think it more likely that this lady SOLD jewellery rather than had a jewellery shop; a high class fashion shop sounds exactly right. Hold the presses - there's more. I just thought to check a book I have The Surfers Paradise Story by Alexander McRobbie (1982) and she gets a mention on page 49 - spelled Leila Floyd (Jewelry - sic). She is part of a list of Surfers Paradise retailers described as "solid retailers who came early and who have stayed". As the book was produced 1982 I would think that would mean she must have been at Surfers 1960's by the latest? so could have easily been in Brisbane 1940's - 50's. And so it would appear Jewellery formed at least a major part of her establishment. Many thanks for your interest. Regards Kaye
I remember the lady more from the Gold Coast in the 70's or 80's. I thought she had a dress shop, classy, but it could have been jewellery. She was a bit of a style icon I thought, but too old for me. I remember her photograph in the fashion or social pages, well dressed and made up, with spectacles and jewellery. I seem to recall that she had an earlier manifestation in, or had come from, Brisbane. I'm not yet 60 but my mum is 84. Not that she was interested in shops, but I"ll ask her anyway. Wait! There's more! I have a cousin who has been a dressmaker in Adelaide St for a hundred years. She'll know if anyone will. I'll ask her this week. Barb Smith
You know, it JUST occurred to me, there is a fabulous postal directory on microfiche at the Queensland State Library in Brisbane. It was issued every year or two and I was able to follow the frequent movements of my family in Brisbane using that source. Perhaps someone could check it for you as to the jewelry shop/jeweler or you could contact the Library for help. Sorry I didn't think of this sooner! Hi Kay I can confirm the info re the railway booking office. We also used to get or renew driving licences in that building which is where the Housing Commission used to be too. I have a vague recollection of a small jewellery shop in that building, facing Adelaide St, on the ground floor, right near to Anzac Square. Maybe this will jog someone else's memory for more info. At that time there were a lot of little shops opposite the Government buildings. I worked near there in the mid to late fifties. Hi Kaye I have a 1960's photo of that area if you want one. It does not show the shops but it's taken from the top of the Bureau of Meteorology in Edward St where I use to work in another life. G'day Edna, Margaret & Kay Many thanks for your quick responses. At least it appears I have the right city. I have checked White Pages and Googled, done everything I could think of. Trouble is I am not sure if the lady Lela Floyd was a jeweller (ie she designed and manufactured herself) or whether she had a "gift" type shop which sold jewellery. From the description "lovely shop" I am inclined to think the latter. So the shop could have been named anything. I thought perhaps if someone had access to phone book listings from around that time, or even better electoral rolls, the name Lela Floyd may show up. If I knew I had the right spelling, and then could not find any reference as a jewellery designer, "shop owner" becomes the logical answer. I have a box with several pieces of nice costume jewellery bought at auction with a handwritten card which has the info about "Lela" and her shop. The jewellery looks 1940's may be 1950's to me - the writing is very old school and shaky - reminds me so much of my Mum's - perhaps someone who went to school in the 1930's? I would think the Gold Coast reference would be 1970's - 80's but that's just a guess. Thanks again to all. Regards Kaye

The only thing I can think of is this.....on the left side of Anzac Square is a building which used to house the old State Govt Insurance Office plus others like the Public Curator etc. On the street level which is Adelaide Street there were and are a few shops. One is/was a tourist office and maybe there was a jewellery shop there too. This building took up the whole block and at the other side in Ann Street, I don't think there were any shops up at that side, but that is opposite Central Station. Hi Jan, The marriage cert should give a clue as to who her guardian was as she was under 21 when she married so someone would have had to give permission (unless she lied about her age, of course!!) Carol
Hi Carol I have all the information on Laura she was born in St George and married in N. S. W. I was just wondering about Mary Ann as she wasn't raised by Laura. Jan > > >
