Hi Carol, If your person died more than 50 years ago anyone can order the certificates for births more than 100 years ago also. Just fill in the forms... (the same forms are used for historical and for the regular entries.) you can see this info on the Queensland Births deaths and Marriages website yourself see below http://www.justice.qld.gov.au/828.htm You need to send only the two pages with the application details on them.. the other pages are for your information only.. (should you be applying for a certificate that requires you send ID.. which you dont have to) So Basically fill in the forms... put your relationship on the form.. distant cousin or whatever... and write for the purpose of family history... and you will have no problems... Just be aware that there is a bit of a wait generally for Queensland Certificates... I recommend you read those historical certificate guidlines though gives you an idea of what they require. best of luck with the research!! Sue.
Hi Carol I now think that Annie was the daughter of Patrick and Sarah Smythe Griffin, and was shown on Sarah's death certificate of 1925 as one of the two females deceased - should have thought of theat earlier. Did research the other family but it was not the one. Hello Carol I have gone online to order the death certificate of Patrick Griffin, died 1864 and marriage certificate of Sarah Griffin and Henry Furse of 1864. I have to download the application form and complete all the information required when ordering historical certificates, plus having to obtain a letter from the next of kin, or am I missing something in the instructions. I have not ordered Qld certificates before and am used to NSW BDM ordering of historical certificates. I doubt if I will be able to order theses certificates as I am only remotely related to the people. I have downloaded an application for a death certificate and 6 pages printed out -I take it I will have to mail all of these if I can obtain permission from a family member who was related to Patrick Griffin who was born in Ireland and died in Brisbane, so I don't think there is a next of kin I can access. I am in a bit of a quandary. I do hope you can help please. Hi Joanne, I think you will find that you can get copies of the certificates if they are back in the 1800s without having to have all the permissions etc. I have forgotten what the time limit is but I think it is either 70 or 100 years after which they are available to anyone. Carol
Hi Carol I found Patrick and wife Margaret on NSW State Records - age and name does not fit so I don't think I was her. If they were unassisted passengers are there any Qld records available please? Hi Carol Thank you for your reply. Where did you find that arrival of th Ebba Brahe please? I would like to obtain the information relating to this couple. My interest in them is for an English cousin who lives in Nice, and when he was abt 18-19 in 1948 he came to Sydney to study at Sydney University, staying with relatives named Furse. He also remembers members of the Furse family visiting his family in England. But he does not know how he is connected to the family and would like to know. His grandmother was Annie Frances (nee Griffin) Russell Jones, born in Qld. abt 1863/4 (no registration for her). When she married John Russell Jones in Sydney in 1881 one of the Witnesses was Sarah Furse (Sarah Smythe/Griffin/Furse). When Patrick Griffin died in 1864 in Brisbane Sarah married Henry Furse in Brisbane, had 4 children, then moved to Sydney. There were no details of Annie Griffin's parents provided on her Marriage Certificate when she married John Russell Jones. If think that Annie was somehow related to Sarah, maybe a daughter. But on Sarah's Death certificate her son provided the information that from Sarah's marriage to Patrick Griffin there were 3 daughters, Rose 65 living, and 2 deceased and no mention of an Annie. On Sarah's Death Certificate, details provided by her son Henry, show that she was 17 when she married Patrick in Dublin, Ireland, that she spent 13 years in Qld, and 55 in NSW. As she was 85 when she died in June 1925, I have made her birth date abt 1840 in Dublin, making her abt 15 if she arrived on the Ebba Brahe - if that was her arrival. For my cousin I would like to be able to show that his connection to the Furse family was through a relationship between Annie Griffin to Patrick and Sarah Smythe Griffin when the widow Sarah married Henry Furse, but with no details of Annie's parents, either in Qld BDM or on her marriage certificate it is hard. Annie Russell-Jones moved to the US in the early 1900's following the death of her husband John - no records of her death there or here can be found. Hope this makes some sense - maybe the shipping records you mention could be of help. Thanks again, Cheers Joanne ----- Original Message ----- From: "Carol Wood" <nanawood@bigpond.com> To: <aus-qld-brisbane@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, October 15, 2008 4:20 PM Subject: Re: [AUS-QLD-BRISBANE] SMYTHE,Patrick Gerald and Sarah arrived Qld abt 1857 > Hi Joanne, > > Queensland was still part of NSW when your lady arrived so maybe they are > listed on NSW shipping records. Hi Joanne, There is an Annie Griffin on the Qld BDMs born in 1863 to a Thomas Griffin and Marian McKenzie. Maybe Thomas Griffin was a brother of Patrick Griffin. Obviously I was wrong about the ship but it was the only Griffin I could find. If they paid their own way there will probably be no record of their arrival in Qld. Carol
Hi Ruth, There is one match in the online index at interment.net http://www.interment.net/data/aus/qld/balonne/stgeorge/st_george.htm Swifte, Claude, b. 1887, d. 1973 HTH Steve Ruth Ridley wrote: > Does some SkS have access to St George Cemetery and > be able to do a lookup for me for the Surname > SWIFTE please > Many thanks > Ruth > > >
Does some SkS have access to St George Cemetery and be able to do a lookup for me for the Surname SWIFTE please Many thanks Ruth
Hi Joanne, Queensland was still part of NSW when your lady arrived so maybe they are listed on NSW shipping records. I note there is a Patrick Griffin (aged 24) and wife listed on the ship Ebba Brahe in 1855. Was Sarah Smythe her married name or maiden name? The marriage entry of Henry Furse says he married Sarah Griffin. Where did Sarah's first marriage take place? Queensland Certificates will have the same information as NSW certificates. Carol
Hello Listers >From 2 NSW death certificates just received, one for Sarah SMYTHE, I found she arrived in Qld frim Ireland in abt 1857, aged abt 17. She evidently had 3 daughters, her Death Certificate of 1925 showing Rose aged 65, 2 deceased. There are no births registered in Qld for these children. Patrick died in Brisbane in 1864, 1864/B1581, and Sarah married Henry FURSE in Brisbane in 1864, 1864/B950. They had 4 children in Qld, moving to Sydney abt 1871. The children's were registered in Qld. I wonder if anyone could please point me in the right direction to find there arrival in Qld, cannot find it on the Qld Government online records. Also, there was an Annies Frances GRIFFIN born in Qld abt 1863-4, no birth registered, who is connected with this family the the FURSE connection, but I have not been able to find her birth and her marriage certificate is very scant on detail. She died in USA and her death details are lost. Any help with tracing any of the above would be greatly appreciated. I will order Patrick's Qld death certificate and Sarah and Henry's marriage certificate, but would like to know what information I am likely to find. Thanks. Cheers Joanne Wyee NSW
Thanks Kerry I have had a reply from a lister who knows Kingsley, still living in Warwick. I have his address from the current electoral roll. I have his entry in the WW2 record. The next of kin was his brother Victor. I am now trying to find out what happened to the other siblings, especially the girls who probably married. Kingsley is the only one mentioned in his grandparents funeral notices. Pam in Brisbane From: "Kerry Raymond" <kerry.raymond@gmail.com> Subject: Re: [AUS-QLD-BRISBANE] LOCKE FAMILY OF WARWICK Hmm, I don't know what went wrong with those previous emails (probably the fact that I'm using a new computer). What I was trying to say was that Kingsley had WW2 service. The index entry in the NAA says: LOCKE KINGSLEY : Service Number - QX61034 : Date of birth - 24 Dec 1923 : Place of birth - WARWICK QLD : Place of enlistment - QLD : Next of Kin - LOCKE VICTOR But unfortunately the records itself is not available online. Note that Kingsley may well be still living aged about 85 years old and similarly his younger siblings may also be still living. So it is worth checking the current electoral roll. Kerry
I am trying to establish whether the above-mentioned John Brown was my Great Grandfather... 'My' John Brown was once a butcher at Grafton , New South Wales , Australia. He seemingly left Grafton , some time after 1881 Perhaps he turned up in Queensland , and resumed his former trade as a butcher.. A reference to a John Brown , butcher , George Street , Brisbane , appeared in The Brisbane Courier , 19 June 1889. I wonder if any subscriber would have any idea how I could proceed to learn more about John Brown , butcher in Brisbane ? Ray _________________________________________________________________

I agree, it's a fantastic site and many thanks & cheers to the wonderful people who are doing all that work. I can't wait till they start updating more years and then putting up some of the local newspapers, but that'll be a long while off yet. I have found a few notices referring to my family also, mostly family notices. But then I haven't gone vey far into it yet. Anyone can correct/update the information, if you zoom right in you can read the text easily (unless the ink is faded or smudged) and then find the corresponding entry in the column on the left hand side, click on the line and correct the text. :) -----Original Message----- From: Maurie O'Connor [mailto:maurie777@ozemail.com.au] Sent: Thursday, 9 October 2008 8:14 PM To: aus-qld@rootsweb.com; AUS-QLD-BRISBANE@rootsweb.com; aus-melbourne@rootsweb.com; aus-nsw-hunter-valley@rootsweb.com; aus-german@rootsweb.com; aus-nsw@rootsweb.com; 'aus-immigration'; aus-qld-ipswich@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [AUS-MELBOURNE] [AUS-QLD] NLA newspaper digitisation project -a great site forinformation on family members & online accessto databases Fantastic project, isn't it? I started correcting some and then (selfishly) though, hang it. I'd much rather read. An absolute gem. And many, many thanks to the person (?) who originally posted the address on whatever newsgroup.
