    1. [AUS-QLD-BRISBANE] Joseph CHALMERS
    2. Rosemary M Chalmers
    3. Hi Listers, Have a query on the above person. Although he and his family doen't seem to have lived in the Brisbane area I am hoping that someone on this list maybe connected anyway. Joseph CHALMERS married Jane LONGMUIR on the 6 March 1831 at Old Monkland, Lanarkshire, Scotland. They had the following children: John born circa 1832 Jane born circa 1838 Margaret born circa 1840 Elizabeth born circa 1843 Joseph born circa 1846 In the 1851 census all these children have their place of birth as Calder, Lanarkshire. Calder is very close to Old Monkland Other records from Queensland indicate that there is another son Alexander Longmuir CHALMERS but I have not found his birth/baptism record yet. The family appear to have migrated to Queensland sometime in the 1850's. Some of the children may not have come with them. Alexander Longmuir CHALMERS married Jane SCOTT in 1878. From the reference given in the Qld marriage indexe it was in country Queensland not Brisbane. Alexander died in 1915, also in country Queensland. Alexander and Jane had the following children, all in country Queensland: Jane born 1880 Alexander Longmuir born 1881 and married Ameila Harriet WAGSTAFF in 1911 Margaret Longmuir born 1883 Kate Longmuir born 1885 and died 1887 Elizabeth Catherine Longmuir born 1888 died 1890 I'd love to hear from anyone who has information on this family. Joseph is the brother of my husband's ggg grandfather, Henry CHALMERS. Bye, Rosemary M Chalmers Palmerston Bookkeeping Services Darwin NT Australia rosechal@iinet.net.au www.rmchalmers.net

    3. Hi Margaret, Thanks for the info, have succeeded in getting to the right area. I had a quick look at the 1913 Electoral Roll for hubby's great grandparents, Robert and Mary Chalmers, of Howard Street. I knew the suburb had had a few changes of names over the years (Baroona Hill, Milton, Rosalie now Paddington) but had never heard of it been called Bayswater!!!! Surprisingly the daughter, who is at the same address, is given as Howard St, off Baroona Hills. Very confusing!!!! 3. Hi Rosemary There are several ways. I had never been to this site before, until today, when I received the original email which I forwarded. I explored and discovered, once I clicked on WorldVitalRecords.com that you can click on Record Types. then Recently Added Databases, and then scrolled down to find at least 4 temporarily free Qld ones. There are actually some fantastic things to find in other areas. My maiden name is unusual, and I put that in, on a general Search place, expecting to see my ancestors - which I did, but also at least 4 entries for ME, relating to my job before I was married nearly 40 years ago!!! so, good luck! :-) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rosemary M Chalmers" <rosechal@iinet.net.au> To: <aus-qld-brisbane@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, November 07, 2008 3:33 PM Subject: Re: [AUS-QLD-BRISBANE] Queensland ElectoralRolls/unclaimedlettersonline > Hi Margaret, > > I've gone to the web site and can find no reference to the Queensland > Electoral Rolls nor the mention of free access for a short time. > Any clues on where I'm going wrong? > > Bye, > > Rosemary M Chalmers > Palmerston Bookkeeping Services > Darwin NT Australia > rosechal@iinet.net.au > www.rmchalmers.net > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Margaret Greer" <mgreer1940@gil.com.au> > To: "Neil" <neil_williams@dodo.com.au>; <aus-qld-brisbane@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Friday, November 07, 2008 1:46 PM > Subject: Re: [AUS-QLD-BRISBANE] Queensland Electoral > Rolls/unclaimedlettersonline > > >> There is temporary free access to these on the same site >> WorldVitalRecords.com >> and if you look up a name successfully, you will also see: >> >> Queensland Family History Society Inc. aims to promote the study of >> family, >> and local history, genealogy, and heraldry, and to encourage the >> collection >> and preservation of records relating to the history of Queensland >> families. >> www.qfhs.org.au Buy it now address - >> http://www.qfhs.org.au/letters.html >> >> Good luck >> >> >> >> ----- Original Message ----- >> From: "Neil" <neilwillo@dodo.com.au> >> To: <aus-qld-brisbane@rootsweb.com> >> Sent: Friday, November 07, 2008 11:03 AM >> Subject: Re: [AUS-QLD-BRISBANE] Queensland Electoral Rolls/unclaimed >> lettersonline >> >> >>> >>> Hi there, I also notice that there is a database for unclaimed letters >>> in >>> this site. 3. Queensland Electoral Rolls from 1903, 1913, and 1922 make up the major collection this week at WorldVitalRecords.com. The database contains more than 1.5 million names and is a great starting place for any individual researching families living in Queensland. These records are provided by the Queensland Family History Society that was established in Brisbane in 1979. The information contained in each search result includes the name, place of residence, occupation, sex, roll number, polling place, and division. The 1903 and 1913 rolls index all electors registered in Queensland for which records survive. The 1922 roll follows the major shifts caused by World War I. It was compiled after a redistribution of electorates. Enrolment was compulsory, though voting was not, so Queenslanders from all walks of life are present in the index. An electoral roll contains a list of the names of all people registered to vote in a particular area. The earliest electoral rolls in Australia begin in the 1840s, for the states of New South Wales and Victoria. There are three types of electoral rolls: Municipal Rolls (1888-1949), State Rolls (1842-1929) and Commonwealth Rolls (1903 to date). The electoral rolls included in this database are commonwealth rolls. QFHS maintains a comprehensive library of reference material, not only for Queensland but also other Australian States and several overseas countries. The first three databases are now available and are free for 10 days. A further four databases will be loaded soon and others will soon follow. Try your luck today at: WorldVitalRecords.com

    3. Paul was right - try before 11.15pm and all should be well. and Anne was right - excellent site for several Queensland (and Australian) newspapers. http://ndpbeta.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/home thanks to both of you ... Margaret Paul said: I have noticed the project website seems to go off the air about 11:15pm (QLD Time) each night so perhaps it was down for maintenence when your tried. =====================================- Anne said: The Moreton Bay Courier of 7 April 1860 has a page of names of people on the voter's list for all of the above areas. I found it by doing a search for my great grandfather Darby McGrath. It includes voters and people with "claims allowed".

    1. [AUS-QLD-BRISBANE] URL not working
    2. Perplexed
    3. I don't know what the problem is Margaret. I clicked on the link I'd sent and it worked for me. You can go to the NLA site: www.nla.gov.au The newspaper digitisation project is on the right hand side at the bottom of the page. Clicking on that will take you to a search page. You can either register and logon or go in as a guest. If you register you can name pages with tags so you can save and revisit them. Otherwise login as guest and do a search that way. Anne
