Robyn asked: How do I find out about gr-grandfather (and gr-grandmother) coming to Australia from Scotland/England in 1864/1865? What is best source for ships' manifests - don't know if he landed in Vic. NSW or Qld. Have a look at http://www.access.prov.vic.gov.au/public/PROVguides/PROVguide023/PROVguide023.jsp Their shipping records are great. There are some similar records online for some other states - google Shipping records and the state name. SOME Qld shipping records are available online, but not all. You need to go to Qld Archives personally to check the card index. The website is: http://www.archives.qld.gov.au/ Good luck Margaret

Mark, The first place I would start looking is the postal directories.... they are on microfiche. Searchable by year and also city or country... also district.. brisbane.. is much easier than the other smaller districts of the time.. and certainly one would think a baker would be listed. As for records pertaining to the bakers themselves unlikely.. It would more be possible if they owned the business. in which there may be records.. or certainly a will would tell you of any business... as it would have had to be divided up. As far as I am aware there is not an industry body that goes back that far.... Regards Sue.
Hi Mark, I'm not sure if there was or is any requirement for bakers or any other tradesmen for that matter to be licensed but bakery shops may have been. I know that in NSW they have to be licensed with the local council, ( I owned one once and so did my grandfather). I am looking for the same info for my grandfather when he was baking in London c. 1903-1912. Good Luck. Hi Margaret, Thanks for your suggestions. My suspicion is that the child was raised by another family member not living in the area although I have nothing to base this assumption on other than the fact that the family member who stayed in the area (the mother of the child also stayed in the area) knows nothing about this child. Regarding your last comment. This has happened to me a number of times in the past few months where my email to the list has taken a number of days to appear. I have no idea why this is happening. Rosemary, A relative was researching a Qld illegitimate birth, with no father listed. But the certificate said WHERE the baby was born, so he went to the locality and asked at the local church and was shown the baptismal register - and the baby was there, with the father's name in the appropriate place!!! (This was in the 1890s) The baby in this case was raised by its grandmother. Maybe you could try that? Nothing to lose ... Except of course you are in Darwin! Where was the baby born, maybe someone local could help? Or some other church records? BTW, your email was apparently sent on Fri 9 Jan, and I just received it, Fri 16 Jan!!!! Hi Steve Thanks for replying. The Hapgoods that I have are from Somerset (My Grand Aunt Florence Dobson married in Mooloolah Joseph Hapgood b. 1901 Milton, NSW) - Joseph's grandparents were George & Hannah Hapgood emigrated on the Lady Ann from Somerset with a brother Thomas & Esther. I don't know if they would be connected - haven't researched any further back on that branch. Thanks once again for the offer Kind Regards Annette ________________________________ From: Steven Sims <steven.sims.a@comcen.com.au> To: aus-qld-brisbane@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, 16 January, 2009 3:03:12 AM Subject: Re: [AUS-QLD-BRISBANE] ROLL CALL Hi Annette, HAPGOOD is certainly a rare enough name! Hi Margery Find my past is the site to go to as they are now owned by Scotlands People who have the rights to publish the census. Either way can get you there. You will see Findmypast on the top right hand corner if you go to the link you have posted. The census site is powered by Findmypast. Yes it is a separate subscription but the units can be used on either site.
