Good Morning: I have hit the bane of geneaologists - the brick wall, and I'm hoping that you will be able to help me break through. My great-grandfather, Alexander John Davidson and his wife, Mary Ann (Ward) were married in Dublin in 1860, went back to Scotland and then migrated to Australia. They lived in Brisbane until he died in 1923 (Toowong Cemetery), and she died in 1888 (also Toowong Cemetery). I have tried and tried to find some evidence of their migration, but nothing! I must not be looking in the right direction. I believe the year was 1864. Do you think you'd be able to point me in the right direction? Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated! Hi Kerry I truly thank you for that web address re the Brisbane City Cemeteries because, through it, I managed to find 2 of my Family; their place of burial was previously unknown. SANDRA from NSW.
Hi Kerry, Thanks for sharing. :) I've spent quite a few hours sifting through the alphabet. lol Kind regards, Sherrie. Kerry, It is my understanding that it was done deliberately after many complaints about how difficult it was to find details of people buried in the various cemeteries. I would think it would have alot to do with the various friends of... the cemeteries I know the folks at Toowong petitioned to have it changed. there are well over 188,000 buried there... makes life a little tricky when you really only have a surname to start with.... Regards Sue.
I'd previously done all my searches with unknown cemetery (and the tedious searches with initials!), but then accidently found that no given name is needed if you specified a cemetery (after all this time!), so even better if they've improved :-) On Wed, 28 Jan 2009 20:15:06 +1000, Kerry Raymond <kraymond@iprimus.com.au> wrote: > Maybe I am just beyond the times here, but I have just noticed that > there is > a change in the Brisbane City Council's online cemetery search that > nobody > seems to have mentioned before. > > > Previously you had to supply a surname (or at least the start of it) and > a > given name (or at least the first letter of it). Maybe I am just beyond the times here, but I have just noticed that there is a change in the Brisbane City Council's online cemetery search that nobody seems to have mentioned before. Previously you had to supply a surname (or at least the start of it) and a given name (or at least the first letter of it). This made it very tedious to search for all RAYMONDs (say) as you had to try each letter of the alphabet as the given name. (A. RAYMOND, B. RAYMOND, C. RAYMOND, etc). Now I discover it no longer requires you to provide any given name (although the instructions still say you have to provide at least the first letter ). Now you just put RAYMOND in the surname box and leave the given name empty and out come all the RAYMONDs. A great improvement. So it has now become a lot easier to undertake a "fishing expedition" than it was before. I have no idea if this change is deliberate or an accident (which may be "fixed" in the future) but it's a good time to do those searches that you'd been meaning to! Here's the URL if you have lost it: http://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/BCC:STANDARD:451177718:pc=PC_899 Kerry
For reasons of privacy, I suspect the funeral director and crematorium won't hand out details of the next of kin. They might be willing to forward a letter from you to the next of kin though. The other possibility is to look for information around the death of his wife (as she appears to have pre-deceased Patrick). For example, her funeral notice might include Gwendalyn's married surname. Hi Folks, A number of years ago I contacted a funeral director (they were in Sydney) and they were good enough to phone the people who had arranged the funeral and give them my details and I had a phone call back that same afternoon. So it would certainly be worth a try. Thank you all for your suggestions. I am in England so appreciate any local help. I did contact the funeral directors when a contact sent me the funeral notice but no joy. I don't know when (or if) Patrick's wife Patricia nee Huntingford died. Her Mother Mary Huntingford (born c 1910) may also have died in the Brisbane area. Online deaths only go up to 1929 and online obits only start in 2006 so no help. Gwendalyn was born in about 1954. She was an only child, as far as I know, as was her Mother who was called Doreen Patricia but known as Pat. It must have been odd to have your parents both known as Pat!
