    1. [AQ-BRISBANE] Births marriages and deaths
    2. Dave Hatherell
    3. Hello, I am a new member to the list, so I hope my question will not seem too basic to you all. I am assisting a provincial French museum in preparing a display about the Allied airmen who are buried in their cemetery. One such is from your neck of the woods, hence my coming to your list. May I please ask about access to Queensland birth, marriage and death indexes? For births this would be 1920s, for marriages 1890-1920 and deaths 1945 onwards. Cheers Dave, in the damp and chilly UK [email protected]

    3. Hello Robert - funny isn't it? - we don't notice lots of things until they are about to come to an end!! As a matter of interest, our family is in no way associated with the mill or its employees, although our second son was offered an apprenticeship there, about twenty years ago. 1. [AQ-BRISBANE] HISTORY OF NAMBOUR
    2. Bev Kerlin
    3. Hi All Some of you will have interests in and around Nambour in South East Queensland, and this is for your "history files". Last week the Moreton Sugar Mill ceased processing our local sugar cane. The relatively new Belgian owners decided the price of sugar could no longer support this operation. Our cane farmers have been fighting for their livelihoods for some time, to no avail. The mill, with its massive chimney, was built 106 years ago and descendants of the builders still live in the area, and in fact, many of them are "Canies". There were others employed at the mill - now, no jobs for any of those people! David and I live on a rise at the end of a spur of mountains, and we overlook canefields on three sides. We have watched the fields change from the newly tilled brown earth, the sprinkling of green shoots on brown, the colour phases of the crops, the purple heads of flowers, the spectacular fires and then the black earth. We have watched flood waters inundate the whole of the northern and eastern fields and some of those of the south. No one can get to Coolum during those times, but some can get through to Yandina/Brisbane or do round tours to get where they're going (as happens during floods, of course). No more rattling little trains hauling even more-rattling cane carriages at 1.25 am and 5.25 am - probably in between too - but one has to sleep sometimes! The locomotives are going to a museum, we are told. Some of the "Canies" are trying corn and maize, some are persisting with cane (most are too mature to learn about new crops) and hoping it can be used for cattle fodder, maybe ethanol, and some are fencing their paddocks and growing food crops for cattle. A couple have a few head already, but there is little high ground for them for when the floods come again. We have just heard that the chimney will still be the main decoration in Nambour for Christmas - it will be festooned with thousands of coloured lights for the last time. Sorry about the length of this message, but the subject matter is of import and will affect families north to Bundaberg -- that is genealogy, known as family history. 2. Helen Smith
    3. Hi Jayne It is going to depend upon whetehr he came out as a "Ten Pound Pom" or not. If he did and you say he landed in Brisbane then the information you need should be at teh National Archives office at Cannon Hill. Although immigration was a Commonwealth scheme the papers are usually kept in the State of arrival. They should be able to give you more details. My father came out with his mother in 1949 as a Ten Pound pom and I got his details of arrival from Sydney. For him there are also sponsorship papers by an uncle who was already in Australia but these are held in Canberra and I haven't got copies as yet. What records can I use to trace him? I had no idea until recently that he emigrated and by 1954 he was working in the Australian Treasury? He did take Australian citizenship as did at least one of his children. When he emigrated he must have been nearly 60.I found the ship he travelled on which is how I knew he arrived in Brisbane. I have no other details though. He did return to the UK by his death though. His name was Charles James Jeapes. Later on his eldest son Charles James aka Stewart Jeapes also went to Australia. This was sometime after 1957 but before 1970.
