    1. BURNING A CD
    2. Des Skelly
    3. I wonder if a lister can help me with a problem. Recently my floppy disk drive gave up the ghost and I had a CD burner installed as it has a higher capacity and was the same cost as repairing the floppy. Because of all the viruses about I now desparatly want to save my family tree records onto CD, but have no idea how to go about it. I use the PAF 5 program and apparently have the Nero burner system installed. When I have my family tree program open and I go to File if I click on "Export" that seems to lead only to creating a gedcom file. I presume I have to click on 'Backup", but don't know what steps to take from there. Would some patient soul take me step by step through what is required to burn the CD? I would be devastated if I lost five years of work. Thank you. Des Skelly [email protected]

    1. [AQ-BRISBANE] Help! Does this burial match death?
    2. Alan Liva
    3. Hello Michelle, I checked at the State Archives today for John Harris Thomas and found the following information: John Harries (not Harris) Thomas died 18 February 1902, Parents - George Thomas and Mary Ann Andrews, and Death Registration Number - 02/001644. In Queensland, Birth records go up to 1919, Marriage records go up to 1939, and Death records go up to 1959. There is no birth record for a John Harries Thomas in Queensland with the parents already mentioned. There is no wedding record for a George Thomas and Mary Ann Andrews in Queensland. Birth and marriage records occurred interstate or overseas. Regards, Alan

    2. Brian Sillett
    3. I'm really keen to see if I can add to my information on Keith SILLETT born 8 Feb 1929 at Brisbane. He married a Joan and had a daughter Julie Therese who later married in to the rather posh Hardinge family (6th Viscount). Julie's engagement was in the London Times in 1985. Keith played cricket for Bengal C.C for one season in 1958/9. If I can find Keith's parents, that would be a good start. Many thanks Brian Sillett

    1. Re: Paddington Cemetery info
    2. Claire V Ferguson
    3. Such is genealogy... Browsing the Paddington Cemetery article recommended by Chris McGregor http://www.queenslandhistory.com/paddington_cemetery.htm) when, there she was: 'Isabella Thomasena Deacon Ferguson ... a child of a year and ten months...died on September 18 1865'. My grandfather's oldest sister! (Exquisite buzz of recognition - you know what I mean.) '...the mother being a sister of John Petrie...' What?! I don't think so! The article goes on to provide a charming anecdote about Isabella's 'father' Bob Ferguson - only thing is, I have Isabella's certificates verifying her parents as William Ferguson and Emily Deacon. Emily was the daughter of Isabella and Thomas Deacon (such determination to pass on the maternal family names - go Emily!). Both Bob Ferguson, and my great grandfather, William, were building contractors in Brisbane (maybe that's where the mix-up arose) but not related as far as I know. Isabella's mother and brothers and sisters were still alive when the article was published. Can't help wondering if there was a letter or two to the editor... Despite the author's mix-up, I thoroughly enjoyed browsing the article - especially the vivid description of the Church of England cemetery - so I'm not disappointed at all - it's just the way genealogy goes sometimes! Many thanks to Chris McGregor for recommending the site. Claire

    1. Re: [AQ-BRISBANE] Help! Does this burial match death?
    2. Steven Sims
    3. Michelle, I can't answer your immediate question, but here's my 2c worth of advice. It seems very likely that the death (18 Feb) and burial (19 Feb) would match - Brisbane was still just a big country town back then, though John THOMAS is hardly a rare name (I have 2 other 19C Tasmanian John THOMAS's in my tree!). You could try phoning the council at 07 3407 8128, to see if they can give more info. Unfortunately I don't think there is a sexton at Lutwyche (but I could be wrong). I found the sexton at the biggest Brisbane cemetery, Toowong, to be very helpful; but they seem to be a rare breed. There are published transcriptions of most cemeteries - but I'm not sure about Lutwyche. If you can't find anyone due to visit the cemetery and willing to help, it may be worth contacting one of the main societies here: http://www.qfhs.org.au http://www.gsq.org.au as they have good libraries covering the Brisbane scene. The Qld Pioneers Index only goes to 1889. What you want for 1902 is the Qld Federation Fiche which covers 1890-1914 - I'm not sure if this is out on CD yet. The death entries do give age, and parents names (including mother's maiden name); assuming of course that this info was known when registered. You may be able to get the staff at the State Research Library to check the fiche for you. See their website http://www.slq.qld.gov.au/ and under Services & Collections, see Ask A Librarian. I think they will do a lookup, but I'm not sure as I haven't used this service myself. However I have always found the SRL staff to be very capable and helpful. Also, if you're sure the death details are for the person you want, the best thing is to get the certificate. Queensland death certificates (at least the pre-1890 ones that I have) are an absolute mine of information. Assuming the informant was able to supply the info, it should have age, place of birth, parents incl. father's profession & mother's maiden name, all spouses, all children, where & when buried, undertaker, witnesses, ... A lot more info than 19C Tassie death registers have! Unfortunately, unlike the early Tassie ones which are on film, you have to pay for Qld ones. I have only ever bought pre-1890 certificates, which are available (photocopied from the original register) from Qld State Archives. For 1902 you need the registrar general, see http://www.justice.qld.gov.au/bdm/home.htm I have never dealt with them, except to get my own birth certificate extract, many moons ago. A death certificate costs $24 (GST free - miracle of miracles!) I'm not sure what you get (photocopy or typed extract). There is no problem with privacy restrictions, for a death more than 50 years ago. See http://www.justice.qld.gov.au/bdm/forms.htm Finally, as the burial is in COE portion, you could try the archives centre at Church House (I had one fruitful visit there - a not often mentioned resource). http://www.anglicanbrisbane.gil.com.au/thediocese/archives/ Good hunting, Steve Michelle Behrens wrote: > Hello list, > > I have a death notice from a newspaper in Tasmania. 3. Hello list, I have a death notice from a newspaper in Tasmania. It refers to the death of John THOMAS, died on Feb 18 1902 at Brisbane, Qld. Formerly of Hobart, in his 56th year. I have looked at the Brisbane City Council cemetery page and found: John Harris THOMAS, buried 19 Feb 1902 at Lutwyche Cemetery. It appears he is buried alone: PART: monumental, PORTION:COE2, Section: 3A, Grave number: 3. Is the City council likely to have any further information than this (eg like is there a headstone, an inscription recorded etc). I am a bit of a novice with regards to Qld records and I would appreciate any help. To my knowledge, my John THOMAS did not have a middle name of Harris - but he may have I suppose. Does the Pioneers Index give any further details eg age, parents names etc. Any advice greatfully received! Michelle in Tasmania

Louis & Rosine had the following children (all born Brisbane, Q): 1. Eliza b. 29.03.1860 2. Frederick b. 30.03.1862 3. Unnamed male b. 24.03.1864 d. Brisbane bet. 1864 - 1873 4. 1. Learning the craft of genealogy online
    2. Kylie Veale
    3. Fellow genealogists, Have you ever used the Internet to learn about genealogy methods and resources? Taken a genealogy course online? Read some 'how to' articles? Then I would like to hear from you. I am an Australian Ph.D. student who is currently writing a book chapter for an academic Virtual Learning Environment publication - my chapter is about using the Internet for genealogical education. I would therefore love to hear from you, fellow genealogists, about any Internet-based content you've used for genealogy education. This includes online courses (free or fee), how-to's, articles/columns, newsgroups, BBS, chat, mailing lists, forums, or even personal web pages that publish learning material - anything online that helps you in learning the craft of genealogy. Your comments on the following is of utmost interest: What are your favourite learning outlets on the Internet? How often do you use them? Can or did you find what you needed online? What are your learning successes? What could be better? What do you look for in genealogical learning on the Internet? If you would like to participate, your comments are extremely welcome. Please send your comments to me directly at [email protected] before Saturday 1st May 2004. I thank you in advance for your participation in this academic research. Kylie Veale P.S. Names and email addresses will be protected and are therefore not included in the publication. Copies of the paper will be made available to interested participants on request, after the book has been published. ----------------------------------------------- Kylie J.
